SpaceX Crew-9 Mission Successfully Docks at ISS: Here's Everything You Need to Know

SpaceX's Crew-9 mission successfully reached the International Space Station (ISS) on September 29, 2024. The NASA astronaut Colonel Nick Hague and Russian cosmonaut Aleksandr Gorbunov boarded the Crew Dragon capsule, named Freedom. After launching from Florida's Cape Canaveral Space Force Station on September 28th, the crew completed a one-day orbital journey before docking at 5:30 PM EDT (3:00 AM IST). Hague is the first active U.S. Space Force member to reach space, further highlighting the significance of this mission.

First Human Spaceflight from Space Launch Complex-40

Crew-9's launch marked a historic moment as it was the first human spaceflight to lift off from Space Launch Complex-40 (SLC-40). Nick Hague and Aleksandr Gorbunov's arrival brings the total number of astronauts aboard the ISS to eleven. However, this mission is also distinctive due to NASA's decision to reduce Crew-9's original four-person roster. Instead, the mission was modified to carry only two astronauts to make room for two astronauts already aboard the ISS who require a return trip to Earth.

Butch Wilmore and Sunita Williams, who arrived at the ISS in June on the first crewed Boeing Starliner flight, were originally scheduled to stay for just ten days. However, technical issues with Starliner's thrusters extended their stay on the station.

Preparing for Crew-8's Departure

Crew-9's arrival also marks the upcoming departure of the Crew-8 astronauts, including NASA's Michael Barratt, Matthew Dominick, Jeanette Epps, and cosmonaut Alexander Grebenkin. The four, who arrived at the station in March, are scheduled to return to Earth soon after Crew-9's docking process is completed. If everything proceeds as planned, Crew-9 will remain at the ISS until February 2025, further supporting ongoing space research and operations aboard the station.

NASA Hubble Space Telescope Captures a Stunning Spiral Galaxy 45 Million Light Years Away

The NASA Hubble Space Telescope has delivered an incredible new image of the spiral galaxy IC 1954, located approximately 45 million light years from Earth in the Horologium constellation, also known as The Clock. Seen at a diagonal tilt, IC 1954's bright core and sweeping spiral arms give it the appearance of a cosmic pendulum. This galaxy is filled with star-forming regions, visible as glowing pink patches in the image, offering a deeper insight into the formation of stars within galaxies.

Combined data from three advanced telescopes

The new observations of IC 1954 significantly improve upon earlier images. The inclusion of H-alpha data, highlighted by red regions in the image, marks the areas where hydrogen is abundant and stars are actively forming. These glowing areas, spread across the galaxy's disc, were explained by the European Space Agency (ESA) in a statement. They mentioned that some astronomers suggest the bright ‘bar' across the galaxy could be an energetic star-forming zone positioned over the galactic centre.

The remarkable detail in the image was made possible by the combined efforts of three powerful telescopes. Alongside the Hubble Space Telescope, the James Webb Space Telescope and the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array in Chile also contributed to this observation.

Together, these instruments are studying over fifty nearby galaxies, offering a comprehensive view across radio, infrared, optical, and ultraviolet wavelengths. This data is essential for understanding how matter moves through interstellar dust and gases in galaxies, aiding in the understanding of galaxy evolution.

The ESA also highlighted the importance of Hubble's ultraviolet and optical capabilities in observing young stars and clusters. These wavelengths capture the most active periods of star formation. The data gathered by Hubble will be instrumental in furthering research on how stars evolve, building on the foundation set by the James Webb Space Telescope's ongoing science missions.

James Webb Space Telescope Finds Distant Galaxy That May Hold Clues to Early Universe

The James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) has once again made a ground-breaking discovery— a distant galaxy that could hold the key to unlocking how the universe evolved in its earliest stages. Detected roughly one billion years after the Big Bang, this galaxy presents a fascinating glimpse into a period when stars and galaxies were just beginning to form. It is said that this dust cloud exists between fully formed galaxy where stars outweigh the gases, and whatever came before the Big Bang event.

A Galaxy Like No Other

One of the most intriguing aspects of this newly discovered galaxy is how its gas clouds outshine the stars. This rare phenomenon has caught the attention of astronomers, as it suggests conditions in the early universe might have been different than previously thought. Typically, stars shine brighter than surrounding gas, but in this case, the gas is so luminous that it dominates the galaxy's light profile.

This odd trait might offer clues about how stars interacted with their environment during this period of cosmic history. The study detailing the discovery has been published in the October issue of Monthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society.

Unusually Hot Stars

In addition to its bright gas clouds, the galaxy also hosts stars much hotter than those found in more modern galaxies. These stars, despite their extreme heat, contain heavier elements, unlike the very first stars in the universe, which were made mostly of hydrogen and helium. This discovery could provide crucial insights into how the universe transitioned from its first, simple stars to the more complex stellar systems we observe today.

Rewriting Cosmic History

With the advanced observational power of the James Webb Telescope, scientists can now look further back into the universe's past than ever before. This galaxy represents just one of many discoveries expected to reshape our understanding of early cosmic evolution. As researchers continue to explore galaxies from this period, they hope to piece together how stars, galaxies, and other cosmic structures emerged from the chaos of the early universe.

Apple Must Face Narrowed Privacy Lawsuit Over Its Apps

A federal judge narrowed a lawsuit accusing Apple of violating the privacy of iPhone, iPad and Apple Watch users by collecting their personal data through proprietary apps such as the App Store, Apple Music and Apple TV.

U.S. District Judge Edward Davila in San Jose, California, dismissed nearly all claims based on the "Allow Apps to Request to Track" setting on Apple mobile devices, but let some claims proceed over the "Share [Device] Analytics" setting.

Mobile device users said Apple violated their user agreements and several privacy and consumer protection laws by assuring that disabling the settings would limit its collection, storage and use of their data - only to then ignore their choices and collect, store and use that data.

The lawsuit seeking unspecified damages is one of many accusing technology companies such as Apple, Alphabet's Google and Meta Platforms' Facebook of allowing the collection of user data without consent.

In a 39-page decision late Thursday, Davila said Apple made clear to users that the "Allow Apps to Request to Track" setting applied to "other companies' apps and websites."

He said that made it "implausible" for reasonable people to believe that by turning the setting off, they were withdrawing consent for Apple to collect their data through its own apps.

But the judge said users plausibly alleged they withdrew such consent by disabling the "Share [Device] Analytics" setting, citing Apple's disclosure that users may "disable the sharing of Device Analytics altogether."

The Cupertino, California-based company has said it collects data through that setting to improve its products and services.

Lawyers for the plaintiffs did not immediately respond to requests for comment on Friday. Apple and its lawyers did not immediately respond to similar requests.

The case is In re Apple Data Privacy Litigation, U.S. District Court, Northern District of California, No. 22-07069.

Taaza Khabar Season 2 Review: Bhuvan Bam Gives The Role His Best Shot

Bhuvan Bam's Vasant Gawde, Mr. Vardaan to the world owing to his ability to see events before they come to pass, is back seeking to make a killing from the prescient news updates that he receives on a mobile phone app.

This time around, the Taaza Khabar protagonist is either on the backfoot or, worse still, down on his haunches. His plight necessitates desperate measures as he faces new challenges hurled at him by a man who will stop at nothing. But the show, notwithstanding a series of dramatic confrontations, struggles to skirt around the pitfalls of an idea that is beginning to wear thin.

In Season 2 of the Disney+Hotstar series, Vasant still banks upon the power of miracles as he is put through the grinder by a vicious political power broker who not only demands more than his pound of flesh but also constantly alters the quantum of his demand, sending Vasant and his mates scurrying for cover.

The bad guy, suave, smooth-talking and slithery, is portrayed by Jaaved Jaaferi, the sole major addition to the cast. He is an addition indeed - he adds considerable value to the otherwise low-on-steam cat-and-mouse game.

The detestable character, who is always in need of funds for his political party and, his own words, does siyasat (politics) in the name of rehmat (charity), has enough clout to pass off coldblooded murders as suicides. A senior inspector of police does his bidding. His henchmen, too, are a handful.

Before he kills, he whips out a gun and a knife and asks his intended victim to choose the weapon that he wants to be slain with, but at most other times he does what his dark heart desires. It is he who drives the season, with the hero only reacting to the villain's provocations and whimsical and repeated goalpost-shifting.

Jaaferi is a seasoned pro. If only the vicious figure that he fleshes out were allowed to break free from the superficial dimensions that he is trapped within, the actor might have had the chance to somewhat elevate the desultory proceedings.

The flashbacks that are meant to give the audience a backstory are crushingly dull and do little to enhance our understanding of exactly why the man's mind works the way it does.

Since Taaza Khabar is meant to be a broad commentary on poverty, material wants, human susceptibilities, the wages of greed, sin and punishment, Vasant had, before Season 1 had wound down, received his comeuppance. He had gone from rags to riches and back to rags in the course of half a dozen episodes.

The young man's vardaan (boon) had turned into a shraap (curse), cutting him off from his parents Alpa (Atishi Naik) and Ashok (Vijay Nikam), his girlfriend Madhu (Shriya Pilgaonkar) and all the trappings that came with the big bucks that he had made in double quick time.

In Season 2, as predicted by a news report, he dies and comes back from the dead not so much by design as by compulsion. He continues to struggle to put his life and accounts back on an even keel as the spiteful builder, Yusuf Akhtar (Jaaferi), hounds him for the massive sum of money that he lost on a cricket bet.

Vasant is running away from his past but he isn't able to make a clean break from the acts and choices that fetched him pots of money before they landed him in a bottomless hole. He can anticipate the near future but fails to figure out a way of outwitting his bete noire, who seems to be always a step ahead of him despite not being privy to secrets hidden in the wombs of time.

One quibble that is to be taken as an aside: the hero wants to hide from the world after his illegal operations go belly up but he chooses to do so plain sight. He is like a scaredy-cat caught in a flash of light. It is difficult to fathom why a man trying to avoid being spotted would not think of changing his looks in order to acquire a new identity.

But from the point of view of the series at large, the avoidance of a makeover is probably logical. Bhuvam Bam, come what may, has to look like Bhuvan Bam. His bandwidth is perforce limited, as, by extension, are the artistic choices of the makers.

There is little that is particularlytaaza in Taaza Khabar Season 2. One isn't talking about the whale vomit or the goat poop that Vasant seeks to benefit from. The approach to the story and its 'moral' ramifications are more yesterday's news than tomorrow's prognostication.

Taaza Khabar Season , directed by Himank Gaur and written Aziz Dalal, Abbas Dalal and Hussain Dalal, is never more than an average good guy-bad guy story. Like so many hundreds of films have sone in the past, it ends in an abandoned, decrepit building that is not only minutes away from collapsing but has every major character herded into it.

Vasant's friends are the same and do the same old things all over again. Peter (Prathamesh Parab), his accomplice and best pal, makes Insta reels and fancies his potential as an influencer. The morose Mehboob bhai (Deven Bhojani) surfaces when the chips are seriously down for the tormented Vasant and never stops being a naysayer.

Bhuvan Bam gives the role his best shot, with the emotional spectrum having been expanded just a bit this time around. Not that its weight is anything to write home about, he carries the show on his shoulders.

His character has to deal with uneasy relationships with a sceptical father and a grievously shortchanged girlfriend that turn more tempestuous than ever. He sheds a tear or chokes on his emotions once in a while, but the lead actor never looks like a man going through hell. Does the unflappability come from years of producing viral YouTube videos?

In one sequence, Vasant and friends look for a priceless memory chip in a landfill. They rummage through garbage in the process. Moral of the story: you have to get down and dirty if you are to find a game-changing treasure. Taaza Khabar Season 2 certainly isn't a junkpile but it does end up in a puddly heap more often than is good for it. Go in with your eyes open.

Love, Sitara Review: A Well-Intended but Lukewarm Take on Dysfunctional Families

Love, Sitara opens with a Kerala wedding, with Sobhita Dhulipala's Tara in the middle of an unabashed introduction to her dysfunctional family. Outwardly portraying a delusionally happy picture of an ideal bunch, Tara's family has perfected the art of casually masking the truth. It is a typical toxic Indian family that runs on hypocrisy and harbours several hushed secrets, enough to tear it apart.

Tara isn't exactly leading a perfect sticking-to-the-plan life herself, though. In the second scene itself we find her panicking in a clinic after finding out that she is pregnant, appalled at the discovery that contraception works only 95 percent of the time. Flooded with emotions, she makes an impromptu marriage proposal to her chef boyfriend, Arjun (Rajeev Siddhartha), with whom she shares a turbulent romantic history – conveniently hiding the truth about her pregnancy. The couple decides to have their wedding at Tara's childhood home in Kerala the same month. Thus begins a complicated circus of secrets, sleuthing, and moulding truths.

The flawed romance here isn't just restricted to the lead pair. Every romantic relationship in the film is flawed. The house helps are wedded off to drunkards and favourite aunts are wrapped in illicit affairs with married men. The film presents a disturbing array of inappropriate couples, laying bare the sad reality of a lot of Indian marriages.

Love, Sitara is a satirical mockery of romantic relationships. It exposes the faults straightaway, without beating around the bush much. The film excels in exposing the hypocrisy that pervades society, where people publicly condemn others for the very same secrets they hide themselves. With unflinching honesty, Love, Sitara reveals the flaws and double standards that often underline our most intimate connections.

What I particularly liked was director Vandana Kataria's attempt at a balanced portrayal of traditionalism and modernity. It is one of the few recent films where the two co-exist and point out the very awkwardness of this paradoxical existence. It doesn't justify the modern hookup culture but questions the traditional marriage set up, as well. The film also steers clear from a stereotypical representation of Malayali households in North Indian cinema, where you see homes reduced to extended temples with rooms.

As for performances, Dhulipala has done a decent job at portraying a flawed, messed up, and selfish woman who cannot get her priorities straight. Tara isn't written in a way that'll move you or make you feel sorry for her and her self-invited troubles, but is a nice break from the stereotypical extremes of women represented on screen. You won't feel much sympathy for her, but that's perhaps the whole point.

Siddhartha and Virginia Rodrigues, however, give the best performances of them all. The two actors bring a calming presence to the otherwise chaotic lives around them. Their poise, as opposed to the hypocrites around them, is enjoyable and delightful. Siddhartha's cooking sequences are cathartic, and Rodrigues' composure in how she handles things is a highlight. Even though the screenplay doesn't offer much room to the two for a multi-layered performance, they shine in their roles.

Love, Sitara intends well and starts strong, but somewhat lacks in its overall execution. The themes of hypocrisy, facade, and infidelity are all touched upon, but the film skirts around the impact these might have on characters and story. Though there are a few powerful scenes, including the one where Rodrigues' character has a nervous breakdown after a disturbing revelation, the momentum keeps ebbing away over time.

The dining table conversations are particularly hard to watch. The laughter feels forced and jokes miss the landing. They feel more like the early morning sessions of laughter yoga than a usual family dinner. Even though the film banks on families' pretentiousness, these fake bursts of laughter become too much to take.

Love, Sitara has all the ingredients of a good film on paper, with a perfect flavour of the traditional and the modern and how both remain deeply flawed, but it lacks a finishing touch. It ends up feeling like a good first draft for a film, which has the potential of translating into to something more challenging and complex, but is released in a rush with its half-cooked ideas, instead. The film conveniently skips on how ugly infidelity can get. While I understand that Kataria might have wanted to keep the film from being too heavy or seeming like moral lesson on monogamy, the narrative nevertheless could have been more compelling if it reckoned with the realities of the relationship issues it brings up.

Some of the tropes seem ill-fitted and act as unnecessary fillers for the storyline, scattered across the film for decorative purposes. For instance, Arjun's dad, a retired military officer, is little more than prop, who was added to the film just as another example of a dysfunctional relationship. He is there just to scorn, give disappointed looks to his son, and wear a pretentious badge of superiority. The film could have, honestly, done well without him, or at least given him a few more meaningful scenes to justify his presence.

Contrarily, some of the character tropes were wonderful in their little presence but heavily underutilized. B Jayashree, for instance, plays Tara's savage grandmother. She is unapologetically herself, loves scanning though newspapers for funny obituaries, and knows when to put her foot down. Jayashree is a joy to watch in each of her scenes. However, even though her character seems important at first, she soon takes a backseat unexpectedly; as if the director forgot about her.

Despite its shortcomings, however, Love, Sitara is a decent take on familial dysfunction in Indian families, that effectively contrasts old-school and modern relationships, while never favouring one over the other. It's a film that shows a mirror to the hypocritical standards of society, which bemoans the unstable, relationship-hopping culture of young people, and yet has been conveniently accommodating inappropriate relationships, if kept a secret. It exposes how the lustful fallacies plaguing humans have been well veneered beneath the mask of idealism.

If only the film didn't shy away from taking on its subject matter with a little more grit, it would have likely made it to the year's favourites list of a lot of cinephiles, including me. Sadly, that's not the case. While Love, Sitara might not be as good as it could have been, it is an honest attempt at portraying the evolving dimensions of love and relationships, even if it doesn't scratch beneath the surface.

Love, Sitara Review: Unpretentious And Steadfastly Simple Film Is Well Worth A Viewing

One brood, three generations, four women and the men in their complicated lives 0ccupy the core of Love, Sitara, a film peppered with the familiar tics of a dysfunctional family drama. Does that make it a trite affair? Not quite.

The Zee5 film directed by Vandana Kataria revolves around an about-to-wed couple who learn, well before they go through with the nuptials, that marriage is indeed anything but a bed of roses.

The peppy and playful Hindi-Malayalam film is punctuated by moments of high intensity that pit sister against sister, man against woman, individual against family.

The flow of the story is a touch uneven and the resolutions and closures that Love, Sitara thinks up tend to be somewhat facile, but the impulses of the men and women who people the plot aren't always predictable.

The screenplay, written by the director and Sonia Bahl, centres on the impending wedding of a Mumbai-based Malayali interior designer played by Sobhita Dhulipala and Punjabi chef Arjun Anand (Rajeev Siddhartha) in the small-town Kerala home of the former's grandmother (B. Jayashree).

The family reunion is the culmination of a choppy now-off, now-on relationship. It only gets worse. Over the span of a few days, everything that can go wrong does go wrong. Buried secrets come to the fore, simmering tensions rise, and angry outbursts put the wedding under a cloud.

The lid is blown off a clandestine love affair. And a marriage hits the skids. As skeletons tumble out of the closet, a long-suppressed truth drives a wedge between two sisters, one 'happily' married the other a confirmed spinster.

In the turmoil that ensues, the family members are forced to have a relook at the choices that they, and their near ones, made in the past and are in the process of contemplating in the present.

On the face of it, nobody in and around the family has any apparent worry in the world. Would-be bride Sitara (Sobhita Dhulipala) is a super-successful interior designer. Bridesmaid Anjali (Tamara D'Souza), the titular character's best friend, is a busy photojournalist. And Sitara's aunt, Hema (Sonali Kulkarni), is an airhostess she looks up to.

The North Indian man who is about to become a part of the family has plans in place for a self-owned restaurant in Singapore. Sitara's dad Govind (Sanjay Bhutiani) heads a hotel chain. Thus, on the professional front, they are all in complete control. It is from the personal sphere that their problems stem.

In the film's opening scene, Sitara is told she is pregnant. The news nonplusses her because her ovaries are believed to be damaged. Alarmed, she returns to Arjun (Rajeev Siddhartha), the man she broke up with a few months ago, and proposes to him.

It is now the guy's turn to be caught by surprise. But he not only agrees to marry Sitara, he also acquiesces to go along with her and tie the knot the traditional way, surrounded by friends and family in Kerala.

After the couple lands in Kerala and they are joined by Anjali, who is unsure if it is a good idea for Sitara to take the plunge, some of the film's focus shifts to Amumma (B. Jayashree), the wise, chatty and insouciant grandma who has a way of making light of the vagaries of the man-woman relationship.

The old lady has obviously seen much more life than anybody else. Truth bombs keep exploding around her. She does not lose her calm. Sitara's mom, Latha (Virginia Rodrigues), Hema's elder sister, does. Her response to a crisis becomes the film's principal flashpoint.

Everybody in the family either nurses a damaging secret or is kept in the dark about an inconvenient truth. They lurch from one crisis to another in the bargain. Their obfuscations range from something as innocuous as smoking on the sly to matters of far greater gravity such as hiding a pregnancy or carrying on with an extra-marital affair long past its expiry date.

Granny, the two sisters and Sitara confront revelations and forgotten indiscretions that threaten to derail their relationships. The pursuit of happiness, they figure out, is invariably a path strewn with thorns, especially when lies are perpetuated to avoid facing the truth.

Discounting a minor squirt of pre-climactic mush, Love, Sitara is a refreshingly non-judgmental, fair-minded and nimble-toed take on the grief that men and women cause to themselves and to those around them as they try to either pull the wool over each other's eyes or attempt to call one another's bluff.

The rigmarole, presented with a sprinkling of humour, adds up to an engaging pastiche of human foibles, marital shenanigans, pre-nuptial second thoughts and emotional somersaults. The film sparkles bright enough and frequently enough for the whirligig to hold its course.

A vibrant colour palette (cinematographer: Szyman Lenkowski), a generally brisk pace (editor: Paramita Ghosh) and a busy storyline in which the past constantly impinges upon the present and where the romantic and the illicit, the tender and the tetchy and the bouncy and the mildly poignant achieve easy co-existence.

As Sitara and her family make their way through the loves and peeves, confessions and recriminations and apologies and assertions that swirl around them, they discover that truth is often unpalatable and discomfiting but it never ceases to be useful.

But Love, Sitara certainly isn't out to harangue or reform anybody. It tells a lively, entertaining story about a complex family that is endearing despite its potted history of duplicities, confusions and compromises.

Actors we do not usually see in Hindi films, from veteran stage and film actress B. Jayashree to Mukti Bhawan producer Sanjay Bhutiani in his first on screen role, liven up Love, Sitara. Virginia Rodrigues, Tamara D'Souza and Rijul Ray (who plays a doctor and family friend) do their bit with aplomb.

Sobhita Dhulipala and Rajeev Siddhartha present convincingly dynamic portraits of two dissimilar people seeking, losing and straining to regain love without abandoning their individuality.

Unpretentious and steadfastly simple, Love, Sitara has a ring of sustained relatability to it. It is well worth a viewing.
