Sam Bahadur Review: Driven By Spirited Performance From Vicky Kaushal

Playing out on a vast and varied canvas, Sam Bahadur crams a lifetime into its two and a half hours. The film covers four decades of active military service, five wars, anti-insurgency operations and brushes with Prime Ministers. Inevitably, Meghna Gulzar's ambitious biographical film feels a tad rushed. But for sure it has nary a dull moment.

The film fires on the fronts that matter. Driven by a high-spirited performance from Vicky Kaushal, it delivers a rounded, rousing portrait of Field Marshal Sam Hormusji Framji Jamshedji Manekshaw, a gentleman and an officer whose grit and gallantry, joie de vivre, power of repartee and an unwavering sense of purpose are the stuff of legend.

An intense character study more than an action-heavy war movie, Sam Bahadur hits most of its targets. It blends the story of an illustrious life - it isn't exactly a from-the-cradle-to-the-grave affair although it does begin with the protagonist as a newborn in a crib - with the exploits of a legendary army man who brought remarkable dexterity to bear upon his job as a soldier and a leader.

The screenplay by Bhavani Iyer, Shantanu Srivastava and Meghna Gulzar adroitly picks incidents and encounters that aid in imparting a vivid, vibrant quality to the picture. As much about an individual as about a nation, Sam Bahadur has the sprawl of an epic and the delicate touches of an intimate chronicle.

As the film flits from one point in time to another from the early 1940s (when Japanese soldiers march into Burma) to the early 1970s (when the Indian Army enters Bangladesh's war of liberation), it has its share of ellipses. But no matter how glaring the gaps are, they do not restrict the sweep of the consistently arresting saga.

The screenwriters graft just enough narrative meat on to the condensed storyline to be able to do justice to the charismatic general whose career it explores in the context of the nation's eventful history before and after Independence.

I fight to win, Manekshaw frequently asserts, often in so many words. That might make him sound like an insuperable Hindi action film hero. But the director makes it a point not to turn the protagonist into a larger-than-life figure - which he probably was to the men he led.

Keeping hysteria out of history, she presents the great soldier not as a single-hued, punchline-spouting general but as a believable human - a man of conviction - intelligent, confident and cocky - and a master strategist who revelled in speaking his mind.

The Sam Bahadur we see on the screen isn't a Bollywoodised version of a hero from the pages of Indian military history, but a man rooted in the real world but endowed with exceptional acumen and courage of conviction.

What's in a name? In the case of Sam Manekshaw, as the film about him tells us, there is a whole lot. In the opening sequence, we learn that Sam's parents had christened him Cyrus but were constrained to rename him because a thief named Cyrus had just been nabbed in the neighbourhood.

In the next scene - it is repeated later in film - an 8th Gorkha Rifles jawan, when Manekshaw asks him if he knows the name of the Indian Army chief, lisps "Sam Bahadur". The apt moniker sticks.

Played with panache by Vicky Kaushal, who walks the tightrope between caricature and authenticity and never keels over on to the side of the former, Sam Manekshaw emerges as a man and an icon who was both enormously charming and dauntingly firm.

Falling back on a jaunty gait, dialogue delivery faintly reminiscent of Hum Dono's Dev Anand and demeanour that exudes both hauteur and amiability - Kaushal livens up the portraiture with distinct mannerisms that are far removed from his own.

One of the most striking aspects of Sam Bahadur is that it eschews flag-waving militarism while celebrating the bravery of India's soldiers. It treads gently and thoughtfully through the life-threatening minefields that infantrymen have to negotiate in the line of duty. There are battle scenes and punchlines aplenty in the film, but they do not overshadow the less flashy components with which the lively biopic is constructed.

Sam Bahadur isn't only about a man delivering rousing speeches to lift the spirits of his men or stamp his personality on the army under him. It is also about the human and personal aspects of a general's life, which are underscored in the moments that he has with his wife Silloo (Sanya Malhotra) and family.

Since the film harks back to a time when love for the nation was not coloured by any manner of religious exceptionalism, it showcases an ethos that hinged on a celebration of unity in diversity, the cornerstone of the idea of India. The war cries of the various regiments (in the film's climactic passages) point to the variegated backgrounds of Indian soldiers marching towards a common goal.

In a significantly resonant scene, a court of inquiry charges Manekshaw with being anti-national because the defence academy he presides over has portraits of British soldiers rather than those of Indian political leaders. The general's response to the flimsy allegation is illuminating. The academy trains soldiers, not politicians, he asserts.

Sam Bahadur slips up a bit in its sketchy portrayal of Jawaharlal Nehru (played by Neeraj Kabi). Indira Gandhi (Fatima Sana Shaikh) receives far better treatment. Not only does India's third Prime Minister get greater play in the narrative, she also has a scene or two is which she nearly steals Sam's thunder.

In one sequence, Mrs Gandhi puts Richard Nixon's Secretary of State Henry Kissinger in his place (using chief of army staff Manekshaw as her trump card) when he threatens India with dire consequences if she attacks Pakistan on the eastern front.

Newsreel footage of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman exhorting his people to rise in revolt, sequences of Dhaka University students being gunned down by the Pakistan army and flashes of General Yahya Khan (Mohammed Zeeshan Ayyub), Manekshaw's friend in their pre-Partition defence academy days, planning to precipitate a confrontation with India are woven into the lead-up to the Bangladesh war. So, Sam Bahadur isn't just talk. There is enough in here to keep the film on the boil all through.

It would be easy to describe Sam Bahadur as a Vicky Kaushal show because it is who dominates every major scene in the film. But without the fine balance that Meghna Gulzar strikes between ambition and restraint, neither the spirited central performance nor its emotional (and cinematic) payoff would have been quite as remarkable.

Ranbir Kapoor On Working With Anil Kapoor In Animal: "I See A Lot Of My Father In Him"

Actor Ranbir Kapoor on Thursday said playing a son to Anil Kapoor's character in Animal brought back "a lot of sweet memories" of his late father, veteran actor Rishi Kapoor.

Directed by Sandeep Reddy Vanga, Animal also stars Bobby Deol, Rashmika Mandanna and Triptii Dimri. The movie is set to be released on Friday in Hindi, Telugu, Tamil, Kannada, and Malayalam.

Ranbir Kapoor, who made his film debut opposite Anil Kapoor's daughter Sonam Kapoor with 2007's Saawariya, thanked the veteran actor for playing his father on screen.

"Thank you, Anil uncle, for doing this. I have shared a very warm relationship with him all these years. To play father-son relationship with him was very grateful.

"I see a lot of my father in him, because they come from similar generations, they have similar thinking patterns. While performing with him, there were a lot of sweet memories that I could recall," he told reporters here at the film's promotional event.

The actor said it was amazing to play a son to Anil Kapoor, "who doesn't look like my father but my younger brother".

"He promised me long back, when I was debuting with his daughter, Sonam Kapoor... He had said, 'Main kisi ka baap nahi banoonga, lekin jab tu film leke aayega main tera baap banoonga'," he added.

"Animal" showcases a violent world set against the backdrop of a troubled relationship between Ranbir Kapoor's Arjun Singh and his father Balbir Singh, played by Anil Kapoor.

Drawing parallels with his equation with his real-life father, Ranbir Kapoor said his relationship with Rishi Kapoor was a combination of love, respect and fear.

"The relationship that I shared with my father, like most of the father-son relationships in India... There's a bit of distance, a bit of fear but there's also love and respect.

"'Animal' is about seeing a father-son relationship through an obsessed son, so it is very different from what I probably shared in real life. Somewhere, subconsciously, you have certain beats and moments in life, the emotional bank to play such scenes," the actor added.

Deol, who plays the antagonist in "Animal", said he is looking forward to the film's release.

"There's nervousness. Every film is special and this film is very special to me as I got to play this character and the opportunity to be working with these actors, so I feel blessed," the "Aashram" star said.

Mandanna said she is nervous about the release of the film. The actor plays Geetanjali, wife to Ranbir Kapoor's character in "Animal".

"I feel like my body has gone super numb and cold right now. I might fumble a lot," she said.

Watching movies on a big screen is an amazing experience, added Mandanna.

"Theatre is like a temple to everyone who works in the industry. You can experience something so amazing with all the sound, vision. Everything is so real, it gives you a different experience. That's why we come to theatres to watch movies on the big screen," the "Pushpa: The Rise" star said.   The actors were speaking at the newly launched property, Maison INOX cinema, a unique luxury boutique property at Jio World Plaza in suburban Mumbai. This is the second Maison cinema in Mumbai.

The new cinema is a six-screen property with a seating capacity of 790 audience members, including the trademark Insignia area with two screens, and the Galleria area with one IMAX screen with laser technology, and three premiere screens. It is the first cinema in Mumbai with an exclusive bar and lounge called GATSBY'S.

Ajay Bijli, managing director, PVR INOX Limited, said it was heartening to see people flock to theatres in huge numbers in the post COVID-19 world.

"Hollywood made 175 movies, down to 65 movies last year because of COVID-19. We have about 1,200 movies in different languages being made. But one thing that has not changed is the flow of content, it is volume driven.

"Second is the passion of Indian moviegoers to still go (to the theatre) even though there's some distraction because of cricket. But the number one out of home entertainment is still movie watching," he said.

According to Bijli, the only thing that has changed in the film exhibition industry over the years is the focus on building infrastructure that offers a great experience to viewers.

"The only thing that has changed is our job as exhibitors, is to build that infrastructure, that conduit between the film goer and the filmmaker. We have to keep pushing the envelope.

"We have to make sure that the experience is phenomenal, that you feel, 'Wow, this is how movies should be seen'. So, incremental improvement in seating, sound, projection system, that's the only thing that has changed," he added.

Animal is produced by Bhushan Kumar and Krishan Kumar's T-Series, Murad Khetani's Cine1 Studios and Pranay Reddy Vanga's Bhadrakali Pictures.

Samsung Galaxy S23 FE Review: Do The Flagship Specs Deliver?

Samsung's FE series has always been a fan favourite since the first Samsung Galaxy S20 FE was released with almost flagship-level specs and a price that sits right between the highest-end A Series smartphone and the entry-level S Series smartphone. This year, Samsung launched two FE devices, the refreshed S21 FE with Qualcomm's Snapdragon 888 and the new Samsung Galaxy S23 FE with Exynos 2200 SoC and a lot of the features that might make the smartphone look like a flagship on paper. Does the highly anticipated Samsung Galaxy S23 FE deliver on the brand's promise when they introduced the first ‘Fan Edition' smartphone, and should you buy it at a starting price of Rs. 59,999? Let's find out in this detailed Samsung Galaxy S23 FE review.

Samsung Galaxy S23 FE price in India

I've been using the base variant for the Samsung Galaxy S23 FE with 8GB of RAM and 128GB of storage in the Mint colour option, which is priced at Rs. 59,999. The Samsung Galaxy S23 FE is available in a higher-end 256GB storage variant as well, with the same amount of RAM, that is 8GB for Rs. 64,999, which makes this smartphone come very close to the vanilla Samsung Galaxy S23 that comes equipped with Qualcomm's Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 SoC. The smartphone can be bought in two more colour options: Graphite and Purple. The brand has also launched two special edition colour options for this smartphone, Indigo and Tangerine, which can only be bought through their official website. The 256GB storage variant is a good addition, but a higher-end variant with more RAM would've been better and justified the price more.

Samsung Galaxy S23 FE Review: Design

The Samsung Galaxy S23 FE sports a design that might be familiar to many people. It uses the same design language as the Samsung Galaxy S23 and the Samsung Galaxy A54, with matte-finished aluminium side rails, volume rockers and a power key that is very responsive and tactile, as a flagship smartphone should. The smartphone uses a dual nano sim card slot with an option to either use one physical and an E-Sim or two physical SIM cards at the same time. It does not come with expandable storage, which is slightly disappointing. It comes equipped with a USB 3.2 Gen 1 Type-C port and stereo speakers that are decently loud. The smartphone comes equipped with Corning's Gorilla Glass 5 protection for the display and the back panel with a glossy finish instead of the matte finish that the Samsung Galaxy S23 sports.

S23 FE design S23 FE design

The smartphone sports Gorilla Glass 5 on the front as well as on the back.

This makes the smartphone prone to fingerprints and smudges a lot. At 8.22mm thick, the smartphone feels a little thicker than your usual smartphone, and 209 grams of weight puts it on the heavier side. It is IP68 certified for dust and water resistance, which is a plus. I had the smartphone with me for a decent amount of time and used it without a case. After only a few days, I started noticing scuffs and scratches on the display glass, protected by Corning's Gorilla Glass 5. The smartphone is a little slippery without the case. Despite the thicker chassis and higher weight, the smartphone still carries the premium look and feel that Samsung flagships are known for.

Samsung Galaxy S23 FE Review: Display

Samsung Galaxy S23 FE sports a 6.4-inch Dynamic AMOLED 2X display with a 1080 x 2340 pixels resolution. The display itself is impressive, no matter if I talk about the colours that it produces or the sharpness. I didn't have any complaints on that front, but the bezels are particularly thick for a smartphone that costs more than 50K and is marketed as an entry-level flagship by the manufacturer. I'd be lying if I said it disappears after you immerse yourself in content; it doesn't and stares right in your face.

S23 FE display S23 FE display

Samsung Galaxy S23 FE features a flat display

It is HDR10+ certified and supports a peak brightness of up to 1450 nits, which feels super bright indoors and outdoors. I did not see much discolouration on the display while using the smartphone in harsh sunlight. The smartphone lets you choose between a standard 60Hz refresh or an adaptive refresh rate of 120Hz. It feels smooth across the board while scrolling through the UI and apps or gaming.

Samsung Galaxy S23 FE Review: Camera

It sports a triple-rear camera setup that includes the primary 50-megapixel camera with an f1.8 aperture with a 24mm focal range that comes equipped with OIS, an 8-megapixel telephoto camera that provides 3x optical zoom with f2.4 aperture and a 75mm focal range with OIS and lastly a 12-megapixel ultra-wide camera with f2.2 aperture.

S23 FE Camera module S23 FE Camera module

Samsung Galaxy S23 FE features the signature Galaxy design language

The smartphone does a pretty good job when focusing on moving subjects, thanks to the inclusion of PDAF for the primary as well as the telephoto camera. Daylight shots from the primary camera came out pretty well; it produced plenty of sharp images from corner to corner and had good details in the shadows and the highlight.

Samsung Galaxy S23 FE daylight primary camera samples (tap to see full size)

Bokeh without the portrait mode looks very pleasing, and to my surprise, this Samsung smartphone didn't overdo with saturation levels. The telephoto camera also maintained the same saturation levels but produced slightly softer images.

Samsung Galaxy S23 FE daylight telephoto camera samples (tap to see full size)

This smartphone's ultrawide camera maintains the colour scheme like the two other rear cameras, but the images tend to distort a lot on the corners, which could be fixed with a future software update.

Samsung Galaxy S23 FE daylight ultra-wide camera samples (tap to see full size)

The smartphone has a 10-megapixel camera for selfies, which clicks pretty detailed images in daylight.

Samsung Galaxy S23 FE selfie camera samples (tap to see full size)

The Samsung Galaxy S23 FE also has a good camera system for nighttime shots. The images take longer to shoot, but OIS helps the user with it, and the shots you get look pretty good. I did notice some noise in the ultrawide shots.

Samsung Galaxy S23 FE nighttime camera samples (tap to see full size)

It uses a 10-megapixel camera with f2.4 for selfies that does an excellent job with daylight, nighttime and portrait shots. It maintains the colour scheme as the other cameras on board, and you will notice that there is some post-processing happening in the background after you click, as it takes a second to show the final image.

The smartphone can shoot up to 8K 24fps with the primary camera; this is a feature that you do not see very often on a smartphone in this price range. I shot multiple handheld 8K videos using this smartphone, and I was impressed with the results I got. The videos were stabilised, had plenty of details and had plenty of dynamic range to play around with if you ever want to edit these videos. It can shoot 4K 60fps videos as well. The front camera, too, can shoot videos at up to 4K 60fps, which is pretty good for content creators.

Samsung Galaxy S23 FE Review: Battery and Charging

The 4500mAh battery does a decent job for a light usage day, but as soon as you include gaming and video streaming, with a high refresh rate turned on, the smartphone does not last very long. The Samsung S23 FE lasted 16 hours and 25 minutes in our battery loop test. Considering Samsung does not provide a charger inside the retail package, support for charging would have been appreciated, as 25W charging support is way too slow for 2023. In our testing, the smartphone charged up to 25% in 30 minutes and 65% in an hour, which is way too slow compared to the competition in this price range.

Samsung Galaxy S23 FE Review: Performance

Samsung S23 FE uses Samsung's Exynos 2200 4nm SoC in India and not Qualcomm's Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 that the consumers in the US are getting, which is a bummer, at least on paper. We ran all the required benchmarks on the Samsung Galaxy S23 FE, and the results were pretty good. It scored 1,174,800 on AnTuTu v.10.0.10, 1130 single core and 3232 for GeekBench 6. I played Call of Duty & Real Racing 3, which ran just fine with high graphic settings.

S23 FE gameplay S23 FE gameplay

The smartphone features the 4nm Exynos 2200 SoC

The frames didn't drop a lot, and the gameplay was smooth. The smartphone did get a little warm after each gaming session. The Samsung Galaxy S23 FE runs OneUI 5.1 out of the box, which is based on Android 13, and it offers a pretty smooth user experience and does not have a lot of pre-installed apps.

Samsung Galaxy S23 FE Review: Verdict

The Samsung Galaxy S23 FE is a smartphone focused on consumers who wish to get the flagship experience but do not want to spend on something like a Samsung Galaxy S23 or S23+. This one lives up to the FE legacy with flagship-level cameras, a good display, decent battery life and a great processor for almost anything you want to do with this smartphone. All this combined does deliver a premium experience, only if you can live with thicker bezels on a smartphone that costs more than 50K in 2023. Considering this smartphone does not have expandable storage, the base 128GB storage variant might not be sufficient for most people and buying the 256GB variant puts this smartphone in the sub 65K price category, which is already very saturated with the likes of OnePlus 11 (Review) with better performance and modern looking curved display.

Amazon Announces New AI Chip for AWS Amid Competition With Microsoft

Amazon.com on Tuesday announced a new artificial intelligence chip for its cloud computing service as competition with Microsoft to dominate the market for artificial intelligence heats up.

At a conference in Las Vegas, Amazon Web Services (AWS) Chief Executive Adam Selipsky announced Trainium2, the second generation of chip designed for training AI systems. Selipsky said the new version is four times as fast as its predecessor while being twice as energy efficient.

The AWS move comes weeks after Microsoft announced its own AI chip called Maia. The Trainium2 chip will also compete against AI chips from Alphabet's Google, which has offered its Tensor Processing Unit (TPU) to its cloud computing customers since 2018.

Selipsky said that AWS will start offering the new training chips next year. The proliferation of custom chips comes amid a scramble to find the computing power to develop technologies such as large language models that form the basis of services similar to ChatGPT.

The cloud computing firms are offering their chips as a complement to Nvidia, the market leader in AI chips whose products have been in short supply for the past year. AWS also on Tuesday said that it will offer Nvidia's newest chips on its cloud service.

Selipsky on Tuesday also announced Graviton4, the cloud firm's fourth custom central processor chip, which it said is 30 percent faster than its predecessor. The news comes weeks after Microsoft announced its own custom chip called Cobalt designed to compete with Amazon's Graviton series.

Both AWS and Microsoft are using technology from Arm in their chips, part of an ongoing trend away from chips made by Intel and Advanced Micro Devices in cloud computing. Oracle is using chips from startup Ampere Computing for its cloud service.

Animal Promotions: Mahesh Babu Calls Ranbir Kapoor "The Best Actor In India"

Hyderabad witnessed a starry night as two superstars from Hindi and Telugu industries coming together on the stage and heaping praise on each other. Ranbir Kapoor went to Hyderabad to promote his upcoming big release Animal, directed by Sandeep Reddy Vanga. Mahesh Babu attended the event as the chief guest. Ranbir Kapoor was accompanied by Bobby Deol, Anil Kapoor and Rashmika Mandanna along with the director and producer Bhushan Kumar to the event. Ranbir Kapoor and Mahesh Babu were all smiles for the camera. They were captured chatting among themselves. Ranbir wore a mustard-coloured blazer while Mahesh Babu chose casual wear for the occasion. Several videos from the event are already viral on X. In one video, Mahesh Babu can be heard praising Ranbir Kapoor with these words, "Told him this thing when I met him but I don't think he took me seriously. So today on this stage I am saying I am a huge Ranbir Kapoor fan. And in my opinion I think he is the best actor in India." Shared by a fan page on X, the video has been receiving huge amount of love from the Internet. Take a look:

In another video, Ranbir Kapoor can be heard addressing Mahesh Babu as "Jai Babu." He can be heard saying. "The first superstar I have ever met was Mahesh Babu. I have seen Okkadu and I messaged him. He replied me back. I can't thank you enough Sir. You came to this event and supported our film." Take a look at the video here:

Here are some more pictures from the night:

In one viral picture, Ranbir Kapoor can be seen showing a photo to Mahesh Babu on his phone. Ranbir Kapoor was reportedly showing his daughter Raha's photo to him. Take a look at the picture here:

Ranbir Kapoor has been on a promotional spree for Animal. A few days back, he shared the stage with Bobby Deol at the Animal music launch event in Mumbai. Ranbir Kapoor also danced to some of the hits from Bobby Deol's films like Barsaat and Gupt. In the film Animal, Bobby Deol is presumably playing the role of an antagonist. The off-screen bromance of Ranbir Kapoor and Bobby Deol has been making the noises as loud as their on-screen fierce fight scenes.

Directed by Arjun Reddy director Sandeep Reddy Vanga, Animal stars Anil Kapoor, Bobby Deol and Triptii Dimri in pivotal roles. The teaser gave us a glimpse of an abusive father-son relationship (played by Anil Kapoor and Ranbir Kapoor respectively) that only became darker and murkier in the course of the film. The film will release in theatres on December 1.
