Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, who has been a regular attendee at the Cannes Film Festival for years, walked the red carpet at the screening of Francis Ford Coppola's Megalopolis on Thursday. The actress, who has served a couple of standout red carpet looks over the years, was her stunning self in a Falguni Shane Peacock outfit. In a post shared by the official Instagram handle of Festival de Cannes, Aishwarya Rai Bachchan's picture was a part of the slide alongside Omar Sy, Greta Gerwig, Nadine Labaki, Anna Mougladis, Irene Jacob. However, the actress was neither mentioned nor tagged in the post. Needless to say, fans of the actress were upset and filled the comments section of the post. Later, the post was edited and Aishwarya Rai Bachchan was name-checked.

The caption on he post read, "Red steps we can't refuse." A quick glance at what the comments section looked like before the post was edited. "How dare you put Aishwarya Rai in second," read a comment. A second comment read, "Aishwarya Rai had to be mentioned too." Another user added, "You couldn't mention Aishwarya Rai in your caption who's been attending Cannes since before Greta Gerwig? The racism that the west holds for Indians will never fail to amaze me." Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga Review - Spectacular And Sporadically Exhilarating

Spectacular and only sporadically exhilarating, Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga is, to be sure, not without its moments. But the moments that the film rustles up come and go without always being convincing in the way that they are staged or in the manner that they are placed within, and in relation to, the 'flow' of the saga.

The world-building in the film plays second fiddle to, if it is not entirely subsumed by, the myth of the universe that George Miller created over the course of four films spread over 45 years.

It takes nearly two and a half hours to tell the origin story of Imperator Furiosa - Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga is longer than any of the other films that make up the popular post-apocalyptic war drama franchise - but that is not necessarily the only aspect of the enterprise that weighs it down. There is also the question of a few of characters not being accorded the play they deserved.

The action in Furiosa straddles a decade and a half. In Fury Road the action panned out over just three days. It is, therefore, understandable at a very basic level why the rhythm of this film is not as consistent as expected.

Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga is fragmentary in its pacing. It alternates between the insanely whippy and the drably predictable as it goes from being dazzlingly mounted to being just a show of one set-piece after another that do not form a cohesive whole. It traverses the whole spectrum, leaving some holes that prove impossible to plug - or shrug off.

Given that Fury Road cast its spell nearly a decade ago, this follow-up was highly anticipated. But notwithstanding its action sequences - the most impactful one plays out in the middle of the film over 15-odd minutes - the film does not fully live up to the hype.

Working with his co-screenwriter Nico Lathouris, Miller pulls no punches in handing out to Furiosa what she deserves - a story that spans from the time that she is an innocent and gutsy village girl to the point in her life when she has channeled her anger and thirst for revenge and is in a position to give the warring men around her a run for their money.

Anya Taylor-Joy is so fantastically energetic yet controlled as the titular heroine that even when images of Charlize Theron from Fury Road flash across our minds she does come off as somebody who might wilt under the pressure of a hard act to follow. In fact, she does not follow. She creates her own path.

Chris Hemsworth embodies Warlord Dementus, a bearded and long- maned leader of a marauding horde of bikers who shows a softer side through the Teddy bear that he carries in order to remember the daughter he lost, with customary panache.

Dementus fights a running war with Immortan Joe (Lachy Hulme, replacing the departed Hugh Keays-Byrne), leader of the Citadel, the powerful settlement of fighters that were in pursuit of Furiosa in Fury Road. In addition to Gastown, the second fortress of Wasteland, and the Bullet Farm, the third fortress, the world that Dementus and Immortan Joe inhabit are perfect specimens of places that are paying for sins of men past and present, They struggle for water and fuel as they battle for control of the scarce resources that are still available.

The paucity of necessities in the Wasteland is what makes Furiosa's village, the Green Place of Many Mothers, an oasis of abundance, a sought-after location whose map only the kidnapped girl who has grown into a full-blown warrior possesses.

She must fight to protect the secret until she is ready to wreak vengeance for the grisly killing of her machete-wielding mother who did everything in her power to save Furiosa.

Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga is low on emotional power because the protagonist's struggle to find her way back home forces her into too many detours. By the time she and Dementus face off and the girl demands her childhood and her mother back, the film has lost its ability to catch us by surprise.

The audience keeps waiting for the confrontation. It comes way too late in the narrative arc. The words Furiosa and Dementus exchange do serve the purpose of rounding off the tale, but the film has several moments when the lines spoken are drowned out by the music or the sound effects.

One other disappointment in the film is the short shrift given to Tom Burke. The actor plays Praetorian Jack, who forms a partnership with Furiosa but he's gone as suddenly as he appears, leaving behind no real traces of the hint of romance that develops between the two characters.

Like the bikes, the war rig and the other moving contraptions that the film uses, many of its warriors are flashes that are only momentary. While some of them make an impression is their respective stray little pockets, they do aren't linked with each other in completely meaningful ways.

Hardcore fans of Mad Max will find a great deal to like here, but if you are the sort of filmgoer who expects much more from George Miller, you will be left feeling shortchanged. This Mad Max saga is mad enough but it isn't driven by the sort of manic force that propelled Fury Road.

Google Pixel 8a Gets AI Wallpaper Generator With First Software Update

Google Pixel 8a was recently unveiled globally and in India. It is powered by an in-house Tensor G3 SoC and joins the Pixel 8 series as the budget offering in the lineup. The smartphone, which runs Android 14 out-of-the-box, has now received its first software upgrade. This update introduced an AI-backed feature, previously available on only the latest flagship handsets, to the phone. Notably, the Google I/O event, an annual developers' conference held earlier this week also witnessed the reveal of several other AI-based features including the update of the Gemini 1.5 Pro.

Google is quietly rolling out the first software update for its latest Pixel smartphone. The almost 190MB update comes with a few upgrades, which include the May 2024 Android security patch and Google's AI-powered wallpaper generator. There are no more notable changes with this update.

The generative AI feature was previously exclusive to the Pixel 8 and 8 Pro handsets. The tool helps create unique wallpapers prompted by user-specified keywords and themes. A customised version of the feature can also be found on Samsung's flagship Galaxy S24 series.

The Google Pixel 8a comes with a Tensor G3 SoC, a 4,492mAh battery with 18W fast charging, a 64-megapixel dual rear camera unit, a 13-megapixel selfie shooter and a 6.1-inch 120Hz full-HD+ OLED screen. Offered in Aloe, Bay, Obsidian and Porcelain colour options, the Google Pixel 8a starts in India at Rs. 52,999 for the 8GB + 128GB, while the 8GB + 256GB variant is priced at Rs. 59,999. 

Among the several AI-focussed announcements at the aforementioned Google I/O event, the company revealed the next generation of its text-to-image AI model, Imagen 3, which comes with upgrades over the Imagen 2, which was introduced in December 2023. The tech giant also unveiled Veo, an AI-powered video generation model, that is said to generate videos longer than a minute with 1080p resolution.

Nawazuddin and Aamir-starrer Sarfarosh recently completed 25 years.

The film, directed by John Mathew Mathan, revolves around Aamir's cop character who vows to eliminate crime after his father is paralysed and his elder brother is murdered by terrorists.

Besides its plot, the other most special aspect of 'Sarfarosh' was its music. Composed by Jatin-Lalit, the film has timeless songs like Jagjit Singh's 'Hosh Walon Ko Khabar Kya,' 'Zindagi Maut Na Ban Jaye,' 'Is Deewane Ladke Ko,' 'Jo Haal Dil Ka,' etc.

Aamir and the makers of Sarfarosh recently held a special screening of the film, where the whole team reunited after so many years.

Cameras will be one of the major highlights of the Motorola Edge 50 Fusion. The smartphone will have a 50-megapixel Sony-Lytia 700C primary sensor with OIS support. It will also offer a 13-megapixel ultra-wide-angle lens with 120-degree FoV, which can also double as a macro shooter.

On the front, the device will feature a 32-megapixel selfie shooter for selfies and video calling. The handset will come with 4K 30fps video recording from both front and rear cameras and Tilt Shift Mode, allowing users to shift their perspective.

Google I/O 2024: Android to Get Support for Scam Call Detection, Circle to Search for Homework using On-Device Gemini AI

Google I/O kicked off on Tuesday, the first day of the company's annual developer conference. During the keynote event, the company's executives also took the wraps off noteworthy new features coming to Android smartphones over the coming months — strangle enough, the company didn't unveil Android 15 features during the keynote event. These announcements have come ahead of the company's next major smartphone operating update that is expected to arrive in the second half of 2024. As expected, Google is set to introduce new features powered by artificial intelligence (AI), building on the path it took with Android 14 last year.

Dave Burke, VP of Engineering at Google highlighted new AI-powered features coming to Android smartphones in the coming months, at the Google I/O keynote event. One of the most impressive features showcased is an upgrade to Circle to Search — the company's visual lookup feature currently exclusive to select Samsung Galaxy and Google Pixel phones — that will allow students to ask for help with their homework. Google says that its LearnLM technology will allow users to circle a prompt to solve "problems involving symbolic formulas, diagrams, graphs and more" — the feature is expected to arrive later this year.

Gemini, the company's AI model that can also run on Android smartphones, is also getting upgrades. The company says that Gemini on Android will soon be able to provide information about YouTube videos, while AI generated images can be quickly added to Gmail and Messages. Meanwhile, users will be able to utilise Gemini Advanced to get answers from PDF documents — without poring through multiple pages — with a new "Ask this PDF" option, according to the company.

Google Pixel smartphones will also gain support for Gemini Nano with Multimodality, the company's latest model for on-device AI processing. In addition to the existing ability to process text input, Pixel phones will be able to process contextual information like visuals, audio, and even spoken information. 

AI is also making its way to Google's most basic smartphone app — the dialler. In a demo shown off at the Google I/O 2024 keynote event, the company demonstrated the ability to detect a potential scam call asking a user to transfer bank information or reveal banking information over the phone. The feature was shown to work in real-time and works on-device to protect user privacy. There's no word from Google on when these features will make their way to users, or which (presumably Pixel) smartphones will be supported.

Google TalkBack, the accessibility feature on Android smartphones will further enhanced with Gemini Nano's multimodal features, according to the company. The service will enable visually impaired users to get more detailed information about images, by filling in information about unlabelled images. Google says that these new features will work on-device, which means that users will be able to take advantage of the improved functionality even when they don't have internet access. There's no concrete launch date for the improved Google TalkBack service powered by Gemini Nano with Multimodality, but the company says it is arriving "later this year".

Last month, a video of the actor from the sets in Hyderabad sent fans waves of excitement. Nicknamed Thalaivar, Rajinikanth recently travelled from Chennai to Hyderabad to resume shooting for Vettaiyan.

This is not the first time that the photos and videos from the sets have been circulated online. Earlier, a photo featuring Rajinikanth preparing for a scene went viral on the internet. The title teaser for Vettaiyan was unveiled in April, offering a tantalising glimpse into the film's world.

For Rajinikanth, Vettaiyan is more than just a project; it marks a reunion with his mentor, the legendary Amitabh Bachchan, after 33 years. Their collaboration has already generated immense buzz, especially after completing a schedule in Mumbai a few weeks ago.

The film will be released in multiple languages including Tamil, Hindi, Telugu, Malayalam and Kannada.

Following Vettaiyan, Rajinikanth is set to join forces with Lokesh Kanagaraj for Thalaivar 171.

Tabu has been roped in for the upcoming Hollywood series Dune: Prophecy. According to a report in Variety, Tabu will be seen in a recurring role in the series that serves as the prequel to filmmaker Denis Villeneuve's Dune, which was released in 2021. According to the report, Tabu will recur in the role of Sister Francesca and her character is described as “Strong, intelligent, and alluring, Sister Francesca leaves a lasting impression in her wake. Once a great love of the Emperor, her return to the palace strains the balance of power in the capital.”

Originally greenlit in 2019 as Dune: The Sisterhood, the series draws inspiration from the novel Sisterhood of Dune by Brian Herbert and Kevin J. Anderson. Positioned 10,000 years prior to the rise of Paul Atreides, the show delves into the expansive universe of Dune, exploring the origins of the Bene Gesserit through the narrative of two Harkonnen sisters battling formidable forces threatening humanity's future.

The series also stars Emily Watson, Olivia Williams, Travis Fimmel, Johdi May, Mark Strong, Sarah-Sofie Boussnina, Josh Heuston, Chloe Lea, Jade Anouka, Faoileann Cunningham, Edward Davis, Aoife Hinds, Chris Mason, and Shalom Brune-Franklin in key roles.

Alison Schapker leads the series as showrunner and executive producer, with Diane Ademu-John co-developing and serving as executive producer.

The Dune saga has enjoyed immense success with the release of two films, collectively grossing over $1.1 billion worldwide. Dune: Part Two was released in March this year starring Zendaya, Austin Butler and Timothee Chalamet.

OpenAI GPT-4o With Real-Time Responses and Video Interaction Announced, GPT-4 Features Now Available for Free

OpenAI held its much-anticipated Spring Update event on Monday where it announced a new desktop app for ChatGPT, minor user interface changes to ChatGPT's web client, and a new flagship-level artificial intelligence (AI) model dubbed GPT-4o. The event was streamed online on YouTube and was held in front of a small live audience. During the event, the AI firm also announced that all the GPT-4 features, which were so far available only to premium users, will now be available to everyone for free.

OpenAI's ChatGPT desktop app and interface refresh

Mira Murati, the Chief Technical Officer of OpenAI, kickstarted the event and launched the new ChatGPT desktop app, which now comes with computer vision and can look at the user's screen. Users will be able to turn this feature on and off, and the AI will analyse and assist with whatever is shown. The CTO also revealed that the ChatGPT's web version is getting a minor interface refresh. The new UI comes with a minimalist appearance and users will see suggestion cards when entering the website. The icons are also smaller and hide the entire side panel, making a larger portion of the screen available for conversations. Notably, ChatGPT can now also access web browser and provide ral-time search results.

GPT-4o features

The main attraction of the OpenAI event was the company's newest flagship-grade AI model called GPT-4o, where the ‘o' stands for omni-model. Murati highlights that the new chatbot is twice as fast, 50 percent cheaper, and has five times higher rate limits compared to the GPT-4 Turbo model.

GPT-4o also offers significant improvements in the latency of responses and can generate real-time responses even in speech mode. In a live demo of the AI model, OpenAI showcased that it can converse in real time and react to the user. GPT-4o-powered ChatGPT can now also be interrupted to answer a different question, which was impossible earlier. However, the biggest enhancement in the unveiled model is the inclusion of emotive voices.

Now, when ChatGPT speaks, its responses contain various voice modulations, making it sound more human and less robotic. A demo showed that the AI can also pick up on human emotions in speech and react to them. For instance, if a user speaks in a panicking voice, it will speak in a concerned voice.

Improvements have also been made to its computer vision, and based on the live demos, it can now process and respond to live video feeds from the device's camera. It can see a user solve a mathematical equation and offer step-by-step guidance. It can also correct the user in real time if he makes a mistake. Similarly, it can now process large coding data and instantaneously analyse it and share suggestions to improve it. Finally, users can now open the camera and speak with their faces visible, and the AI can detect their emotions.

Finally, another live demo highlighted that the ChatGPT, powered by the latest AI model, can also perform live voice translations and speak in multiple languages in quick succession. While OpenAI did not mention the subscription price for access to the GPT-4o model, it highlighted that it will be rolled out in the coming weeks and available as an API.

GPT-4 is now available for free

Apart from all the new launches, OpenAI has also made the GPT-4 AI model, including its features, available for free. People using the free tier of the platform will be able to access features such as GPTs (mini chatbots designed for specific use cases), GPT Store, the Memory feature through which the AI can remember the user and specific information relating to them for future conversations, and its advanced data analytics without paying anything.
