Mr & Mrs Mahi Box Office Collection Day 1: Janhvi Kapoor-Rajkummar Rao's Film's Pitch-Perfect Start

Released this Friday, Mr & Mrs Mahi managed to score impressive numbers at the box office. On its opening day, the sports-drama, headlined by Rajkummar Rao and Janhvi Kapoor, minted Rs 7 crore, according to a Sacnilk report. Directed by Sharan Sharma, the movie narrates the story of Mahima, a doctor who marries a failed but talented cricketer, Mahendra. Over time, Mahendra realises that his wife is a gifted cricketer and decides to train her to become a professional. The film also features Zarina Wahab, Rajesh Sharma and Kumud Mishra in important roles. Mr & Mrs Mahi has been jointly produced by Zee Studios and Dharma Productions.

A day ahead of Mr & Mrs Mahi's release, Jahvi Kapoor shared a BTS video from the sets on Instagram. In the clip, the actress is dressed as her character. As the cameraman approaches her, Janhvi can be heard saying, “Kya hai? [What?]”, “Ho gya na? [It is done, right?”, “Aaj ke liye itna hi footage milega [That's all the footage you'll get for today.]” She makes hand gestures signalling the cameraman to stop filming. Soon after, a cheerful Janhvi asks if she can share a “secret.” Janhvi's mood changes and she asks, “I wanna know what you are capturing?” and “kitna close up lega? [How much of a close-up shot are you going to take?]” Towards the end, Janhvi talks about a self-written poem that she does not wish to be recorded.

“I was clearly losing my mind on set on most days….#MrandMrsMahi out tomorrow book your tickets now!” read the text attached to the post.

In an NDTV review, film critic Saibal Chatterjee gave Mr & Mrs Mahi 2 out of 5 stars. He wrote, “The lead actors do their bit to keep us invested in the narrative and the emotions of the two principal characters. Rajkummar Rao, always on an even turf, delivers Mahendra's recriminations, some directed at his father, others at his wife, with conviction even when the lines that the character speaks are riddled with self-pity.”

“Janhvi Kapoor's Mahima does a good job of swaying between indecisive and assertive. She wields the willow like a plucky pro all right, but the marital pulls and pressures that she has to deal with lessen the female power that she is supposed to represent,” the review added.

Dedh Bigha Zameen Review: Pratik Gandhi Shines Bright In A Desultory Film

A common man fighting for his rights in a system loaded heavily against him is a familiar figure in Hindi movies that seek to address the inequities that plague the nation. The protagonist of Dedh Bigha Zameen is cast in the same mould.

Written and directed by Pulkit and streaming on JioCinema, the film roots for an Everyman who wages a battle against his circumstances, the law and a flagrant abuse of political power. However, the methods it employs are so understated that the anger and frustration of the underdog barely register.

The line between the subdued and the bland is very thin in Dedh Bigha Zameen. The hurdles that the principal character encounters seem insurmountable but he carries on regardless. He fights a good fight all right but the film does not measure up.

The restraint inherent in the telling of the story stands out but the drama says nothing at all that we do not already know. The bad guys here aren't the greedy zamindars and moneylenders of yore but a dowry seeker, a dishonest broker and a powerful land-grabber.

Dedh Bigha Zameen uses a worn-out plot to drive home the sorry plight of a grain trader who is compelled to take a stand against a local legislator in a small town in Uttar Pradesh although he is aware of his own abject powerlessness.

Bits of the indolent Dedh Bigha Zameen pass muster because of what lead actor Pratik Gandhi brings to the table. Using nuanced means, he creates a believable portrait of a man weighed down by adversity. He shines bright in a desultory film that pieces together an oft-told story.

The film makes its point all right but lacks the potency to make the audience sit up and bristle with indignation at the way things turn out for the hero.

Dedh Bigha Zameen never quite springs to life although there are points in the narrative where the audience feels the tormented hero's pain. His struggles come across as real and relatable but the impediments he faces - his material needs, his sister's wedding, a disputed piece of land that cannot be sold, a smarmy local politician who will not budge and the nagging fear of failing in his duties to his family - are overly familiar and predictable. His progress, or the lack of it, does not, therefore, startle.

Pratik Gandhi plays Anil Singh, a faceless and unflappable wheat seller who lives with his mother (Neeta Mohindra), wife Pooja (Khushalii Kumar) and sister Neha (Prasanna Bisht). Trouble erupts when he finds a match for his sister and decides to sell a small piece of land to fund the wedding.

Anil hires a local broker to find a buyer for the land. But he learns that an MLA has grabbed the plot. The proposed wedding is in danger of being nixed unless he can get the politician to relinquish his claim on the land. Thus begins an unequal battle against an invincible opponent who is unlikely to get out of Anil's way unless his hands are forced.

The wafer-thin storyline centres on the meek Anil who hopes against hope that he can meet the busy legislator and appeal to his better nature. When he finds his chances of regaining control of the land receding, he decides to go all out. I may be a face in the crowd that counts for nothing but I will fight, he says to his wife.

The women around Anil are mute spectators. Anil's wife does occasionally get a word in edgewise but his sister and mother have no say in his decisions. Anil himself is as docile as a lamb. Even when he is pushed against the wall and has nothing to hold on to, he does not lose his composure. His faith in the law and the property papers in his hand keep him going. But he is thwarted and betrayed at every step.

As indicated earlier, Dedh Bigha Zameen isn't a typical good-versus-evil drama. The hero does not have an overarching villain to contend with. Evil here is widespread and deep-rooted and manifests itself in small, deadly doses of malice that poison the lives of those who have over generations been browbeaten by the system into believing that they must make peace with the powerful and wealthy in order to survive.

The outcome of the David-Goliath face-off is a foregone conclusion for everyone except Anil and his family. They live in hope. Some of it is reposed in the police. But the law enforcers have no interest in protecting the likes of Anil. Inspector Sunil Yadav (Faisal Malik) gives Anil a hearing on a couple of occasions but does nothing to redress his grievance.

A concerned uncle (Daya Shankar Pandey) and a loyal friend, Asif (Avinash Chandra), do whatever they can to help Anil tide over the crisis but nothing is ever enough. The problems that confront the man are intractable. There are rare moments when Anil takes the law in his own hands, but his aggression usually boomerangs except when it is directed against men who are his size and, therefore, as reconciled to their fate as he is.

His story is as crushingly dreary as the nondescript town that he lives in. There is little in the screenplay that either brings the location alive or has the potential to conjure up situations that could make Anil's struggles worthy of sustained attention.

One thing that Dedh Bigha Zameen does is eschew false optimism or heroic derring-do, a choice that may seem like a departure from the defining conventions of the genre but in the absence of any significant tonal variations, parts of the 100-minute film frequently sinks into tedium.

Pratik Gandhi is in nearly every frame of the film - that isn't a bad thing at all - but the maker of Dedh Bigha Zameen would have done well to give the supporting actors more to do.

The way Dedh Bigha Zameen ends is disconcerting, if not surprising. But that is about it. There isn't much else in the film that comes anywhere near anything that isn't drably commonplace.

Apple Said to Plan AI-Based Siri Overhaul to Control Individual App Functions

Apple Inc. is planning to overhaul its Siri virtual assistant with more advanced artificial intelligence, a move that will let users control individual app functions with their voice, according to people with knowledge of the matter. The new system will allow Siri to take command of all the features within apps for the first time, said the people, who asked not to be identified because the initiative isn't public. That change required a revamp of Siri's underlying software using large language models — a core technology behind generative AI — and will be one of the highlights of Apple's renewed push into AI, they said.

The upgrade is one piece of the company's larger AI strategy, which will be unveiled at its Worldwide Developers Conference on June 10. Apple is preparing several features, including voice memo transcriptions and summaries, quick recaps of websites and notifications, automated message replies, advanced photo editing, and AI-generated emojis, Bloomberg has reported.

As part of the rollout, more basic AI tasks will be processed on devices themselves, while more advanced capabilities will be handled via cloud computing. The company also has been forging a deal with OpenAI to integrate the startup's chatbot and other technology into the iOS operating system, and it remains in talks with Google parent Alphabet Inc. to use its Gemini software in the future. Apple software boss Craig Federighi has told his teams to develop as many new AI features as possible for this year's operating system updates.

Siri will be a key focus of the WWDC unveiling. The new system will allow the assistant to control and navigate an iPhone or iPad with more precision. That includes being able to open individual documents, moving a note to another folder, sending or deleting an email, opening a particular publication in Apple News, emailing a web link, or even asking the device for a summary of an article.

A representative for Cupertino, California-based Apple declined to comment.

Today, Siri is limited mostly to broader commands like playing music playlists, looking up information or controlling smart home appliances. The company also offers what are known as app intents to developers, allowing them to craft ways for Siri to tap individual features. In 2018, Apple launched Siri Shortcuts as well, letting users manually create commands for app features.

The new system will go further, using AI to analyze what people are doing on their devices and automatically enable Siri-controlled features. It will be limited to Apple's own apps at the beginning, with the company planning to support hundreds of different commands.

The feature is one of Apple's more complex AI initiatives and isn't planned for release until as soon as next year, when it will be part of a subsequent update to iOS 18, according to the people. The first version of the new operating system will launch in September, around the same time as the next iPhone models.

At the start, the new Siri will handle one command at a time, but Apple has plans to to allow users to chain commands together. For example, they could ask Siri to summarize a recorded meeting and then text it to a colleague in one request. Or an iPhone could theoretically be asked to crop a picture and then email it to a friend.

A major component of the new push is a system that will use AI to automatically determine if a function should be handled on the device or via the cloud.

That has raised some privacy questions. While on-device tasks won't share personal information, the cloud-based approach will require some user data to be transferred to remote servers. The information will be protected by the so-called Secure Enclave in the high-end Apple Mac chips powering the data centers, Bloomberg reported earlier this month.

Apple will attempt to further reassure customers that their data is private by creating an “intelligence report” that explains how the information is secured. The iPhone maker also won't build profiles of customers — something it's criticized Google and Meta Platforms Inc. for doing.

With the Siri upgrade, Apple is looking to reinvigorate a pioneering product that fell behind competitors' services. The company first launched Siri in 2011, giving it a head start in voice-based interfaces and AI. But Apple soon lost that lead to Amazon.com Inc.'s Alexa and the Google Assistant. Then it was caught flat-footed again when generative AI chatbots emerged two years ago.

Apple also is contending with a sales slowdown, and its shares have underperformed those of peers this year. The stock is down about 1% in 2024, compared with a 10% gain for the tech-heavy Nasdaq 100 Stock Index. Apple was up 0.5% to $191.29 in New York on Thursday.

Apple is betting that the new AI features for the iPhone, iPad and Mac — as well as the Siri enhancements — will encourage users to upgrade their devices. Many of the on-device AI capabilities will require an iPhone 15 Pro or later to work. Macs and iPads, meanwhile, will need at least an M1 chip.

Mr & Mrs Mahi Review: Moderately Engaging Film That Struggles With Inconsistent Pace

Cricket and marriage get into an awkward tangle in Mr & Mrs Mahi, a sports melodrama that hinges on action on the field of play and plenty of reaction off it, mostly in the realms of a relationship that runs into tricky terrain.

The Sharan Sharma-directed film is about sport but it segues into a tale of marital discord when thwarted ambitions collide with suppressed emotions. The narrative is unusual to say the least but the treatment is devoid of any major departures from norm.

A man who has never had it easy resolves to help his wife revive and hone the rough-and-ready batting skills she acquired as a girl playing tennis ball cricket with the neighbourhood boys.

Rajkummar Rao and Janhvi Kapoor play the two cricket fanatics who become life partners. When the man fails to earn himself a second chance to make it big as a cricketer, the duo decides to channel their energy and experience into catapulting the lady, a diffident junior doctor in a Jaipur hospital, into the game's big league.

Produced by Zee Studios and Dharma Productions and written by Sharan Sharma and Nikhil Mehrotra - the combination that created Gunjan Saxena: The Kargil Girl - Mr & Mrs Mahi is, at best, a moderately engaging film that struggles with inconsistent pace.

It is simplistic and superficial in its exploration of sporting achievement and its personal and public spinoffs seen in the context of their repercussions on an apparently happy marriage of two amiable individuals with unresolved daddy issues. The film's central emotional nub feels stretched.

The story is about a girl is coerced by her dad to give up cricket in order to prioritise her medical education, but the film revolves primarily around the man she marries. The latter is a failed cricketer forced by his domineering father to stop playing the game and join the family's sports goods shop.

The two dour daddies, played by Kumud Mishra and Purnendu Bhattacharya, are the principal hurdles that Mahendra Agarwal and his wife Mahima Agarwal nee Sharma - the two names are abbreviated to Mahi - have to surmount as they seek to break free from familial shackles.

Cricket gives them courage and binds them but it also threatens to tear them apart. Their fight for freedom and fulfilment also involves coming to terms with success and the rewards that if offers by way of fame and recognition. Coached by her husband, Mahima makes rapid strides and wrests a spot in the Rajasthan women's team.

With a mix of cross-batted strokes, orthodox off drives and cheeky switch-hits, the lady grabs her chances and quickly overshadows Mahendra. As she basks under the increasing media spotlight, the husband sulks and grumbles. He feels he deserves to be feted as a successful talent-spotter.

Mr & Mrs Mahi, at least parts of it, might have worked better had it stuck to a comic vein of the kind that it strikes when a disgruntled Mahendra makes reels to apprise the world of his role in the late-blooming Mahima's rapid ascent.

Mr & Mrs Mahi never rises above the humdrum although it does have elements that render it passable as a relationship drama set against the backdrop of cricket.

For one, it does not subject the audience to the incessant babble of blabbermouth commentators and the shrieks and shouts of roaring spectators to drive home the 'rousing' impact of the sporting action on the screen.

The film falls back instead on-field chatter and an excitable coach's instructions from beyond the boundary line as devices to ratchet up the drama and provide additional information on Mahima's hits and misses.

Because the film focuses on the exploits of a single player, all the others, members of Mahima's team as well as her opponents, are mere adjuncts thrown in to provide her with a platform to demonstrate her wares.

Off the field, Mahima is demure and tentative. On it, she is dynamite. She has a swing at every delivery that she faces. Hitting fours and sixes comes easy to her. If the ball is in the slot, I hit, she says. She gets struck by bouncers a couple of times. To be sure, she is down but never out.

But no matter how desperately the film tries, the excitement isn't as intense and infectious as it is intended to be. It is way too easy to anticipate how things will turn out for Mahima and her husband who has a thing or two to prove to his doubting dad. That takes a great deal of the fun out of the proceedings.

The lead actors do their bit to keep us invested in the narrative and the emotions of the two principal characters. Rajkummar Rao, always on an even turf, delivers Mahendra's recriminations, some directed at his father, others at his wife, with conviction even when the lines that the character speaks are riddled with self-pity.

Janhvi Kapoor's Mahima does a good job of swaying between indecisive and assertive. She wields the willow like a plucky pro all right, but the marital pulls and pressures that she has to deal with lessen the female power that she is supposed to represent.

Mahima is projected as a lady whose fate is always in the hands of the men in her life - her father, her husband and the women's team coach, whose impulsive ultimatums keep her on her toes. For the most part, she plays along, resigned to her lot.

When she eventually musters the gumption to say mujhe tumhari madat nahi chahiye (I do not need your help), one cannot but wonder why it took her so long to come to that decision.

That, in a sense, sums up Mr & Mrs Mahi. The film makes the right noises but not before putting the female protagonist through a grind devised by the men around her. And finally, it is not her dad but her husband's father who has got to be mollified. The girl achieves a great deal but she can be happy only if her hubby and his dad are happy.

What the film conveys is that the female Mahi is incomplete without the male one. The conflicting and convoluted messaging is a mishit that lands nowhere. The result is a feeble gender equality tale that plods its way, exhaustingly at times, to a rather predictable end.

Google Confirms Authenticity of Over 2,500 Leaked Internal Documents Related to Search: Report

Google is said to have confirmed the authenticity of the thousands of internal documents that were reportedly leaked earlier in May. The data reportedly includes information about how Search works and Google's user data collection for web page ranking. While the company initially refused to react to the leaks, it is reported that it has now been acknowledged, although Google has also advised caution against “making inaccurate assumptions”.

Google confirms Search leak

In an email to The Verge, Google spokesperson David Thompson said, “We would caution against making inaccurate assumptions about Search based on out-of-context, outdated, or incomplete information”. Thompson also claimed that Google is working to protect the integrity of the search results from manipulation, adding that the company has “shared extensive information about how Search works and the types of factors that our systems weigh.”

The issue reportedly came to light when search engine optimisation experts (SEO) Rand Fishkin and Mike King published analyses of 14,014 attributes (internal API documents) leaked from inside Google's Search division and shared with them by a source.

These documents are reportedly part of the “Content API Warehouse” that the company's employees use as a repository. It is further reported that the document's code was uploaded on GitHub on March 27 and wasn't removed from the platform until May 7.

Contradictory information

In a blog post, Fishkin claimed that many claims that Google has made over the years contradicted the information provided by the source, such as consideration of clickthrough rate (CTR) as a ranking signal and subdomains as a separate entity.

In another example of contradiction, the documents reportedly mention Chrome data when it comes to ranking websites on Search. However, the tech giant has time and again claimed otherwise, saying it does not make use of Chrome data to rank web pages.

According to Fishkin, many of these claims also overlap with what Google revealed in its testimony during the US Department of Justice antitrust case. Furthermore, other claims also suggest insider knowledge. Although most of the information would be better understood by SEO personnel, Fishkin's analysis reveals what data Google actually collects from searches, web pages, and sites.
