ISRO Successfully Launches X-Ray Polarimeter Satellite; Will Study Black Holes, Other Celestial Objects

ISRO on Monday successfully launched its maiden X-Ray Polarimeter Satellite that would offer several insights into celestial objects like black holes.

ISRO's ever reliable Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle (PSLV) in its C58 mission, placed the primary X-Ray Polarimeter satellite XPoSat into a 650 km Low Earth Orbit as intended after lifting off at the pre-fixed time of 9.10 am from the first launch pad in Sriharikota.

As the 25-hour countdown concluded, the 44.4-metre-tall rocket lifted off majestically with thunderous applause from spectators who had descended here in large numbers at this spaceport situated about 135 km east of Chennai.

The X-ray Polarimeter Satellite (XPoSat) is aimed to investigate the polarisation of intense X-ray sources in space.

According to ISRO, it is the first dedicated scientific satellite from the space agency to carry out research in space-based polarisation measurements of X-ray emission from celestial sources.

The X-Ray polarisation serves as a crucial diagnostic tool for examining the radiation mechanism and geometry of celestial sources.

The primary payload of XPoSat is POLIX (Polarimeter Instrument in X-Rays) which is designed to measure polarimetry parameters by Raman Research Institute and XSPECT (X-ray Spectroscopy and Timing) built by the U R Rao Satellite Centre, Bengaluru. The Mission life is about five years.

ISRO will also launch the state-of-the-art joint venture satellite with NASA — NISAR — in the first quarter of 2024. Built at a cost of $1.5 billion (nearly Rs. 12,500 crore), NISAR (NASA-ISRO Synthetic Aperture Radar) is targeted for launch onboard India's GSLV rocket.

Data from NISAR will be highly suitable for studying the land ecosystems, deformation of solid earth, mountain and polar cryosphere, sea ice, and coastal oceans on a regional to global scale.

Nothing Phone 2a Price, Colour Options, RAM and Storage Configurations Tipped

Nothing Phone 2a is expected to be unveiled at the Mobile World Congress 2024. Over the past few weeks, details of a new smartphone from Nothing have surfaced online. The UK-based OEM is said to be working on the Nothing Phone 2a, which is likely to launch with trimmed specifications as compared to the company's last handset, the Nothing Phone 2. Design renders alongside several key features of the purported phone have been tipped previously. Now, a tipster has suggested the price, colour options, and RAM and storage configurations of the Nothing Phone 2a.

Tipster Roland Quandt (@rquandt) shared in a post on X that the Nothing Phone 2a is likely to launch in Black and White colour options. He also claimed that the base variant of the smartphone with 8GB of RAM and 128GB of onboard storage could be priced below EUR 400 (roughly Rs. 36,800). The tipster added that the handset could also be available in a 12GB + 256GB variant but did not hint at a price range for this option.

An earlier leak suggested that the Nothing Phone 2a will be listed at $400 (roughly Rs. 33,200). This leak also showed a PVT unit of the phone that featured a horizontal camera module placed centrally towards the top of the back panel, while the front panel was seen with a centred hole-punch slot for the front camera. It was also seen with a redesigned Glyph Interface.

Meanwhile, a recent report had claimed that the Nothing Phone 2a could include a 1/1.5-inch 50-megapixel Samsung S5KNG9 primary sensor alongside a 1/2.76-inch 50-megapixel Samsung S5KJN1 sensor with an ultrawide lens at the back. It may also get a 32-megapixel Sony IMX615 front camera sensor.

The Nothing Phone 2a has been tipped to come with a MediaTek Dimenisty 7200 SoC and a 6.7-inch  120Hz AMOLED panel with a resolution of 1,084 x 2,412 pixels. It is likely to ship with Android 14-based Nothing OS 2.5. The phone is expected to launch at the 'Nothing to See' MWC event in Barcelona on February 27.

Best Smartphones of 2023: Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra, OnePlus Nord 3, Pixel 7a and More

The ever-changing landscape of the smartphone industry in India is always surprising. This year, there have been plenty of changes and several newcomers in some segments to make for a very interesting mix of devices for eager buyers to choose from. While most regulars like Xiaomi and Realme have seen a handful of launches in the budget segment, brands like Motorola and Infinix have gone in all guns blazing. Xiaomi has been making headway into the higher end of the budget range and the mid-range instead.

The battle between Samsung and OnePlus has never been bigger than 2023, when OnePlus launched its first book-style foldable, the Open, late this year (after several delays). Brands like Oppo and Motorola took things a step up with foldables and premium smartphone offerings, while Samsung took it relatively easy with the same, but delivered a rather capable camera-focused flagship with its Galaxy S23 Ultra. Google ushered in the age of AI on smartphones, but definitely missed out on the ‘folding' bit in India, which has seen its fair share of buyers this year.

And with so much choice and variety in certain segments, it gets equally hard to pick and choose the right smartphone. Unfortunately, not all the smartphones that we have reviewed over the past year have managed good scores as per our ratings. Fortunately, there are several that stood out, and basically managed to deliver what was expected from them. So, we have come up with a list of devices (in no particular order) which we consider to be the best at what they do. If you are looking to bring in the new year with a brand new smartphone, or have been a bit unsure about switching to a new device type or segment, this one's for you!

Phones Gadgets 360 rating (out of 10) Price in India (as recommended)
OnePlus Open 9 Rs. 1,39,999
Motorola Razr 40 Ultra 9 Rs. 72,999
Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra 9 Rs. 1,24,999
Samsung Galaxy S23 9 Rs. 74,999
Apple iPhone 15 Pro Max 9 Rs. 1,59,900
Apple iPhone 15 9 Rs. 79,900
Google Pixel 7a 8 Rs. 38,999
Nothing Phone 2 8 Rs. 39,999
iQoo Neo 7 Pro 8 Rs. 34,999
OnePlus Nord 3 5G 9 Rs. 29,999
Samsung Galaxy A34 5G 8 Rs. 26,999

OnePlus Open

The OnePlus Open (Review) can best be described as a breath of fresh air in the book-style or horizontal foldables space which has been dominated by Samsung with its Galaxy Z Fold lineup since the category showed up in India. For a phone that's managed to surpass our expectations from every possible angle (not just as a foldable but even a regular smartphone), it sure seems like an achievement to get so many things right in the first attempt.

The Open managed to outdo Samsung's Galaxy Z Fold 5 (the latest version of its best foldable yet) by a large margin by offering a slimmer and lighter design (with an IP rating), fast charging (sans wireless charging), better battery life and the very obvious imaging capability. Its Open Canvas software feature also seems like a different and novel take on the multitasking front. Its compact form factor and broad cover display make it function like a regular smartphone when folded, which is not the case with the Z Fold 5. While it lacks wireless charging (which Samsung offers, it makes up for it with 80W wired charging, and it all comes at a price that's a lot lower than Samsung's Galaxy Z Fold 5 with plenty more storage and RAM.

Motorola Razr 40 Ultra

Another smartphone that managed to take us by surprise this year was Motorola's latest Razr 40 Ultra (Review) foldable. It packs in quite the punch for a smartphone this compact and slim. It may lack the latest Snapdragon processor, but its main use case lies in its well-optimised cover display software experience, which is second to none in the clamshell foldables segment.

Its IP52-rated design makes Samsung's Galaxy Z Flip 5 and the Oppo Find N3 Flip appear chunky. There's also that large cover display with a rather unique, embedded floating camera layout, which looks unreal and radical. Camera performance is good for a foldable, and the battery life will give you a day of use. But this phone also does well when it comes to gaming. It won't bring back any memories of the iconic Razr (V3/V3i) flip phones of the early 2000s, but it sure sets a new standard by bringing in its own iconic style, which has been hard to mimic to date.

Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra

When it comes to zooming in, there is really no competing with Samsung's Galaxy S23 Ultra (Review). With Huawei not around anymore, Samsung's Galaxy Ultra lineup has made its cosy space between the regular Galaxy S23 phones (S23, S23 Plus) and its Galaxy Z Fold lineup and dominated this segment while competing with Apple's Pro-range of ultra-premium devices. Priced at Rs. 1,24,999, it's a space that no other brand (on the Android side of things) has dared to enter late when designing regular slate-type smartphones.

Samsung has also managed to justify this pricing by continuing to retain what made the now-defunct Galaxy Note series unique. This would include an S-Pen (which slides into a built-in silo), a massive display that supports the stylus. There's also a desktop-like Dex functionality for the productive types. And then it takes forward the bits from the Galaxy S series lineup by adding an excellent 200-megapixel camera, the capability of which remains unmatched in India (no matter which camp you come from). The customised Snapdragon SoC and excellent battery life are simply bonuses that buyers can take advantage of. We just wished it came in a smaller, more compact package, as this phone is quite a handful.

Samsung Galaxy S23

Just like the Galaxy S23 Ultra, the Samsung Galaxy S23 (Review) has made its peace with the world and still continues to be the only compact flagship in its segment. Despite commanding a high price tag of Rs. 74,999 and looking very similar to its predecessor, this compact powerhouse has plenty of under-the-hood improvements over the previous model. While the SoC upgrades were what we expected, Samsung also packaged a vapour cooling chamber into its compact footprint, keeping this phone cool when stressed. Battery life has also improved over the Galaxy S22, and it can easily handle a day of heavy usage on a single charge. Camera performance is top-notch (even though it has seen no upgrades) and delivers what one would expect from a Galaxy S series device. Despite no new or added features over its predecessor, the Galaxy S23 still remains the compact flagship to beat solely because of its form factor.

Apple iPhone 15 Pro Max

As Apple struggles to add new and upgrade-worthy features to its smartphones, it's finally going back to basics (with some help from the EU). The iPhone 15 Pro Max (Review) manages to do pretty much what it claims to do and that is quite the leap from the iPhone 14 Pro, which banked heavily on Dynamic Island as its highlight feature. This year, Apple worked on tweaking and optimising its cameras, including the new telephoto camera, which exceeded expectations when it came to zoom performance.

It's not all about the cameras, either. There's a new customisable Action button and the big shift to USB-C, which many more users will appreciate. Along with the standard Pro model, it's also the first globally produced smartphone that makes use of titanium for its frame, which also makes it lighter compared to its predecessor. It can also run AAA gaming titles with jaw-dropping graphics thanks to the impressive A17 Pro (3nm) processor. It's the iPhone that is worth upgrading to even if you own the previous iPhone 14 Pro.

Apple iPhone 15

After several years of incremental upgrades to the standard iPhone lineup, we finally have a regular iPhone that actually packs in some notable upgrades. The iPhone 15 (Review) despite not having any segment-leading features (compared to other Android smartphones at this price point), still manages to be quite an exciting product for iPhone users. This is mainly because of the ‘Pro-grade' features that have trickled down from the high-end models.

This would include a better Apple A16 Bionic chipset from last year's iPhone 14 Pro, better higher-resolution cameras (one of which also offers lossless in-sensor zoom), USB-C and Dynamic Island. It still retains a 60Hz display (probably in place to deliver better battery life), but it will be the go-to iPhone model for years to come thanks to Dynamic Island and USB-C. And this automatically makes it the base iPhone model that newcomers will crave.

Google Pixel 7a

The Google Pixel 7a (Review) is the only Pixel phone to be launched this year, which seems to offer immense value for money. While it may look similar to last year's Pixel 7, it does pack in a ton of upgrades. This would include the upgraded Tensor G2 SoC, which enables a number of AI-related photo editing features and camera tricks, new high-resolution cameras, a reliable fingerprint reader (compared to the Pixel 6a) embedded into a high-refresh-rate 90Hz display and wireless charging.

All of the above is available at an attractive price tag of Rs. 38,999, which is indeed really good value for money, given that you are getting a near-stock serving of Android, which will also be the first to receive software updates, along with the fun Feature Drops which Google releases every few months.

Nothing Phone 2

While the Nothing Phone 2 (Review) was launched at Rs. 44,999 in India which seemed borderline good given its core hardware, it new lowered price of Rs. 37,999 makes it bit more convincing for buyers who are looking for something different in an Android smartphone.

From its unique transparent looks to its custom software skinning and the Glyph light notification system, which has become more useful with the latest software updates, it is a special and unique experience for those tired of looking at the same icons and widgets on every other Android device. The Phone 2 also offers a better set of cameras than the previous model's average camera performance. Indeed, the Phone 2 sure helps Nothing get past the image of being an artsy, fashion-forward phone to a practical one that works well even as a primary device.

iQoo Neo 7 Pro

iQoo has always delivered when it came to good value, matched by equally good performance with their Neo series. But it's recent Neo 7 Pro (Review) goes above and beyond, making it a worthy recommendation in this shortlist.

For starters, there's the faux-leather option in terms of design, and it's all packaged into an IP52-rated body. Inside, iQoo offers a Qualcomm Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 SoC, which is rare in this segment and offers premium-level performance. There's a 120Hz high-refresh-rate display with skinny bezels and a large 5,000mAh battery with 120W wired charging that is fast enough to go from 0-100 per cent in under 30 minutes. The primary camer's performance is quite impressive as well. All in all, the iQoo Neo 7 Pro turns out to be a flagship killer of sorts.

OnePlus Nord 3 5G

The higher-end of the budget smartphone range has been growing in popularity because of the many features brands can pack into these phones, increasing their overall value. This is not the case with the mid-range, which struggles to add premium features at a palatable price tag while attempting to appear unique and stand out in terms of cosmetic design. Out of the many mid-range smartphones we have reviewed this year, the OnePlus Nord 3 5G (Review) sure stands out.

It offers distinctly mid-range specs by going with the MediaTek Dimensity 9000 SoC. But it pairs it with a premium-looking IP54-rated design with razor-thin bezels on its 120Hz refresh rate AMOLED panel, which also supports HDR10+ content. There are quality cameras all around, and they're all backed up by a large 5,000mAh battery with 80W fast wired charging support. Perhaps the most impressive detail about this mid-ranger is its price, which has now been dropped to Rs. 29,999, making it an easy recommendation.

Samsung Galaxy A34 5G

Another phone that has managed to be an all-rounder in the budget segment this year is Samsung's Galaxy A34 5G (Review). We called it the ‘Jack of all trades' in our review, and it was for good reason because this phone manages to pack in a lot of hardware and features at an impressive price point and somehow manages to deliver on those well.

The Galaxy A34 5G may not be as powerful as other smartphones in its class because of its MediaTek Dimensity 1080 SoC, but it gets along fine with multitasking and most 3D gaming requirements. There's enough RAM, storage and even expandable storage so that this phone will check a lot of boxes for various buyers. Camera performance is good in all conditions, and the battery easily lasts a day on a single charge. Its design is also very similar to the premium Galaxy S series, but it's not just about looks, as it also has a solid IP67 rating for dust and water resistance, which is rare in this segment.

Recap 2023: 10 Best Indie Films In A Year Of Plenty

It was an eventful year for Indian mainstream cinema. Moviegoers returned in hordes for the theatrical experience. Blockbusters minted big bucks. SRK ruled the roost like never before. Box-office powerhouses of the South demonstrated their enduring crowd-pulling prowess. Mammootty chose films that made us sit up and marvel. Vidhu Vinod Chopra's 12th Fail soared without the aid of star power. But there were plenty of films out there that made 2023 special. They reaffirmed the beauty of small and independent. They made a strong impact at international film festivals and in the multiplexes (if only in a handful of instances). The year's top ten niche films that strained to break free from their market-enforced confines:

FAMILY

Latest and Breaking News on NDTV

Writer-director-editor Don Palathara does not put a foot wrong in Family, a spare, piercing tale of religious manipulation of a closely-knit rural flock. The impeccably crafted Malayalam film employs strikingly subtle methods to probe the Church's centrality in a village in Kerala's Idukki district, where the guardians of morality close ranks instinctively to shield those that they regard as their own. The central figure (Vinay Forrt) is a man the village cannot do without. A lurking leopard sparks fear. But there is worse afoot in the village that is as quick to condemn and censure as it is to condone. Couched in the film's unerring cultural specificity and social inquisitions are universal truths about human propensities. Family reinforces Palathara's reputation as a filmmaker with a voice entirely his own

MAAGH - THE WINTER WITHIN

Latest and Breaking News on NDTV

Aamir Bashir's second film in an intended Kashmir trilogy - the first, Harud, was made over a decade ago - is inarguably one of the most powerful Indian films of the year. It won Audience Awards in Busan and Nantes and played in festivals in Kerala and Dharamshala. It deserves a much wider audience. Maagh maps the anguish of Kashmir on the face of a care-worn woman and in its snow-covered landscapes. The woman (a terrific Zoya Hussain) searches for her husband who she believes is in a detention centre for suspected militants. She works as a domestic worker in Srinagar and weaves intricate shawls to complement her income. Fired from her job, she returns to her remote village enveloped in deathly silence and life takes an unexpected turn. The visually stunning but distressing Maagh highlights the plight of half-widows but does not stop there. The cinematic cri de Coeur is equally concerned with the toll that continuing violence takes on its victims.

WHISPERS OF FIRE AND WATER

Latest and Breaking News on NDTV

Debutant Lubdhak Chatterjee's Whispers of Fire and Water blends image and sound to sublime perfection in the service of a stark portrait of exploitation and denudation of the coal mining belt of Jharkhand's Jharia. The Hindi-Bengali film follows an audio installation artist who wends his way through the region to record sounds of despair and dispossession. The sights and the crackle of decay affects him deeply. He meets a migrant mine worker from a tribal village. The barrenness of a land sucked dry by mining and an underground fire is contrasted with the harmonious vibrations of a dense forest that is home to the tribals of the area. The film's subdued drama emanates as much from the soundscape as from the visuals.

POKHAR KE DUNU PAAR

Latest and Breaking News on NDTV

First-time director Parth Saurabh's distinct voice comes through with perfect clarity in Pokhar Ke Dunu Paar. The film centres on the uncertainty that grips an eloped couple who return to Darbhanga amid the Coronavirus pandemic. If running away from home was disruptive, returning is no less so. The father of the girl, Priyanka (Tanaya Khan Jha), has disowned her. The boy, Sumit (Abhinav Jha), looks for a job in vain. As he drifts aimlessly, he reconnects with his old friends, driving a wedge between him and Priyanka. The lovers' ardour is in danger of turning as decrepit as their hometown. Real, relatable characters, conversational dialogues and visual compositions that combine the instinctive and the heightened set Pokhar Ke Dunu Paar apart from run-of-the-mill romantic stories of defiant lovers tested by circumstances.

RAPTURE

Latest and Breaking News on NDTV

The wages of fear-mongering are examined with sharp-eyed clarity in Dominic Sangma's Garo-language film, Rapture (Rimdogittanga). It forays into the heart of the darkness that engulfs a community that is led to believe the worst. A gradual blurring of the line between social solidarity and tendentious, illogical paranoia drives a Meghalaya village to the brink. Sangma's muted storytelling style not only imparts depth to the timely cautionary tale, it also occurs acute delineation of the undercurrents that hinge on mix of unreasonable fear and blinding hatred. A boy witnesses a brutal act. Nightmares push him into delirium. But among the adults, prejudice has no limits. Rapture is a story rooted in a place. But the import of what it spells out has relevance beyond its geography.

NIHARIKA IN THE MIST

Latest and Breaking News on NDTV

Indrasis Acharya's Niharika in the Mist, an emotionally engaging portrait of a young woman (played superbly by Anuradha Mukherjee) seeking to live down the scars of an unhappy childhood, employs remarkably refined methods to portray suppressed emotions and barely articulated urges. The protagonist looks to anchor herself in a place that makes her feel safe and empowered. The serene landscape - the film is set in a little hamlet on the Bihar-Jharkhand border - provides a contrast to the turmoil in the woman's heart as she strives to wrest control of her life. Having grown up surrounded by an ailing grandfather, an abusive father, a predatory uncle and several suffering women, she searches for stability in the home of a maternal uncle, a striving that isn't without its own complications. Niharika is a female-centric film steers clear of worn-out tropes.

AATTAM

Latest and Breaking News on NDTV

In first-time director Anand Ekarshi's sure-footed Malayalam film Aattam, the insidious workings of patriarchy and moral expediency play out in circles traditionally considered progressive. Set in the world of theatre and its practitioners, the film is a stinging commentary on the place of women in male-dominated spheres. The only female member (Zarin Shihab) in a drama troupe complains of sexual misconduct. At the behest of the woman's boyfriend (Vinay Forrt), a married actor going through a messy divorce, a meeting is convened to discuss the accusation. Consensus eludes the men. The lure of a foreign tour dilutes their resolve to hold the culprit to account. Talk of a compromise begins. A seemingly open-minded, gender-sensitive bunch of men waver and retreat into old habits and questionable ways of thinking. The power of Aattam flows from its dispassionate yet hard-hitting expose of entrenched gender faultlines.

THREE OF US

Latest and Breaking News on NDTV

A charming, heartwarming drama, Avinash Arun Dhaware's Three of Us journeys into the world of a woman (Shefali Shah) who is slowly losing her memory. She requests her insurance agent-husband (Swanand Kirkire) to take a week off so that they can travel to the Konkan town where she went to school. Once there, the woman looks for an old soulmate (Jaideep Ahlawat) to not only relive a phase of her life that ended abruptly but also to come to terms with a personal tragedy that forced her to leave for Mumbai without bidding goodbye. Three of Us is a delectable and moving story of beginnings and interruptions, of forgetting and remembering. Powered by three exquisite performances, the cinematographer-director's flawless craft and a marvellous original score by Alokananda Dasgupta, this is a treat like no other Hindi film that made it to our multiplexes in 2023.

GOLDFISH

Latest and Breaking News on NDTV

One of two films about a dementia-afflicted woman made in 2023, Goldfish, like Three of Us, is helmed by a cinematographer-director. But that and the quality of the writing and acting apart, it is tonally unlike Avinash Arun's film. Goldfish has Deepti Naval in the role a woman whose memory begins to slip away. Kalki Koechlin plays her estranged daughter who returns to their suburban London home during the pandemic and struggles to reconnect with a mother she drifted away from years ago. Goldfish isn't exactly a two-hander, but the delicate exploration of a strained mother-daughter relationship acquires quiet and consistent power due to the pivotal duet of brilliant performances. A perfect blend of heart and craft, the film favours conventional linear storytelling without succumbing to the easy methods that filmmakers are lulled into by its established dynamics.

SHESH PATA

Latest and Breaking News on NDTV

The odd one out because the Bengali film written and directed by Atanu Ghosh is the only entry in this list that is toplined by a certified star. But in substance and spirit, Shesh Pata (The Last Page) never loses its independent spirit. A hard-edged yet tender character study that delves into the psyche of a jaded writer (played by Prosenjit Chatterjee) who has retreated into a brittle shell in the aftermath of a tragedy and finds himself incapable of putting pen to paper, the film has phenomenal tonal and textual consistency. Ghosh's organic cinematic craft and a top-notch lead performance lend Shesh Pata consistent solidity. Exceptionally intelligent plotting creates room for the supporting characters who serve to complete a vivid portrait of a city and a society sitting on a mound of paradoxes triggered by sweeping socio-economic changes. Shesh Pata is no ordinary accomplishment.

Recap 2023: The 10 Best Foreign Films Of The Year - An Alternative List

In 2023, several established masters articulated or responded to the anxieties and strife that relentlessly stalked the world. Loach, Kaurismaki, Scorsese, Nolan, Wenders and Ceylan delivered films that ranged from the stunningly masterly to the unerringly essential. The real surprises, however, came from less-fancied directors, a few of them first-timers. Marked departures from norm, daring formal experiments and striking thematic sleights informed these small but sparkling gems. Barring Hong Sang-soo and Denis Cote, the directors in this 'best of 2023' selection (in no particular order) may not command instant recall. But they deserve to. For the reasons, read on...

Latest and Breaking News on NDTV

In a fractured world, Belgian director Bas Devos revels in mining the minutiae of life in quest of connections and inspirations that sustain humanity. Here, his fourth film, extends his concerns. It depicts a mingling of two worlds - one represented by Stefan, a Romanian construction worker in Brussels, the other by Shuxiu, a Chinese-Belgian bryologist working on a doctoral thesis on mosses. Stefan is about to return home. He makes a pot of soup with vegetables left in his fridge and distributes it among his friends. He defers his departure after a chance encounter with Shuxiu in a restaurant. Her attention to the tiniest of things and her innate ability to feel the warmth of Nature capture Stefan's fancy. A beautiful, delicate bond evolves between the two. Devos, working with the 4:3 format, captures the blossoming through pure images that speak louder than words. Here is cinema that soothes and heals.

Smoke Sauna Sisterhood

Latest and Breaking News on NDTV

Candour and authenticity of a rare kind underpin Estonian filmmaker and singer Anna Hints' Smoke Sauna Sisterhood. The 90-minute documentary uses a culture-specific phenomenon to delve into the souls of women who bare their bodies and hearts in a smoke sauna. They share their innermost thoughts and personal experiences. The sorority thus formed is more than just skin deep. The film abjures sexualization of the female body. Hints, Sundance best director prize winner, films the bodies with deep empathy - mostly from the neck down - as the women shed shame, guilt and doubt. A fascinating soundscape - created by Hints in collaboration with Icelandic composer Edvard Eglisson - complements the conversations. A magnificent breakout.

In Our Day

Latest and Breaking News on NDTV

Once you have warmed up to the cinema of the prolific South Korean auteur Hong Sang-soo, it keeps on giving. In Our Day may not be as instantly hypnotic as 2022's Walk Up, but its rumination on art, relationships, everyday conundrums and hot pepper sauce has the power to cast a spell once you grasp the languid rhythm of leisurely meals and freewheeling conversations. Hong peppers the film with intertitles - a deviation from his usual style - to indicate what is on in the minds of the two principal characters. One is an actress who has just returned from a stint abroad. The other is a septuagenarian poet who wonders if he is still relevant though his work has found a new generation of followers. And between the two are the actress' friend (whose house serves as her temporary home), visitors and a couple of cats - one dead, the other lost and found. In Our Day is another little marvel with Hong's unmistakable signature.

Mademoiselle Kenopsia

Latest and Breaking News on NDTV

No film captured the impasse caused by the worldwide Covid-19 lockdowns quite as consummately as Mademoiselle Kenopsia. It is crafted with uncompromising visual purity by Quebecois director Denis Cote. His 15th narrative feature explores the human engagement with disused public spaces. A woman played by Cote's frequent collaborator, Larissa Corriveau, goes through the motions of watching over an abandoned space. Acutely aware of the inexorable ticking of time and the physical dimensions captured in carefully-composed frames, the film performatively and cinematically examines the line separating solitude that cleanses and loneliness that disconcerts. The title refers to a neologism signifying deserted spaces that once bustled with life. In the film's whimsicality is tempered with profound method.

Critical Zone

Latest and Breaking News on NDTV

A subversive look at drugs and despair in the Tehran underworld, a reality that Iran's cinema rarely reveals, Ali Ahmedzadeh's Locarno Golden Leopard-winning Critical Zone is a revelatory piece of cinema with the makings of a cult film. It careens through the streets of Tehran as it follows a lonesome, insomnia-afflicted drug dealer Amir (Amir Pousti). The man navigates the city with the help of his car's GPS and provides hope (like a present-day messiah) to broken souls cut adrift by a regime bent on strangulating individual urges and instincts. Ahmedzadeh's previous two films - Kami's Party and Atomic Heart - are banned in Iran. Critical Zone, filmed without official permission and populated by real people, is another act of rebellion. Worth celebrating. Its voices - and words of wisdom - deserve to be heard.

Mami Wata

Latest and Breaking News on NDTV

C.J. 'Fiery' Obasi's Mami Wata is rooted in West African folklore. Shot in luminous high-contrast B&W, the hyper-stylised film is visually arresting and narratively solid. It represents a revolt against both Nollywood and Western filmmaking practices. It ventures into a creative zone that Nigerian filmmakers have hitherto steered clear of. Mami Wata is about two sisters who fight for peace and harmony in a fictional seaside village ruled by a messenger of the eponymous water goddess. The community is on the brink of being robbed of its traditional belief in the deity that has ensured its well-being for generations. A probe into power, divinity and the plight of people caught between conflicting philosophies, Mami Wata is a unique and gripping film.

Four Daughters

Latest and Breaking News on NDTV

A startling documentary-metafiction hybrid, Tunisian director Kaouther Ben Hania's Four Daughters was one of the most unusual films of 2023. But that isn't the only reason why it is on our list. Daring in form and emotionally affecting, the film dissects the impact of radicalization on a Tunisian mother and her four daughters. Her two elder daughters joined the Islamic State in 2015. The director engages a pair of professional actors to play the sisters who left. This artistic choice sets up a delicately porous and remarkably effective exploration of the mind of a mourning mother (in parts of the film actress Hend Sabri impersonates her) swaying between comforting memory and unsettling anguish. Four Daughters, co-winner of the Cannes Golden Eye, is a sharply chiselled essay that delves into family dynamics and the pain of hard-to-fathom separation.

Grace

Latest and Breaking News on NDTV

A reticent man and his daughter struggle to make ends meet in Ilya Povolotsky's bleak and dark road movie Grace (Blazh). Using sparse dialogue and suffused with melancholy, the film follows the duo as they drive across the vast landscapes that abound in Russia. Their camper van contains everything they possess, including a film projector for their travelling cinema, the principal source of their meagre income. The Cannes Directors' Fortnight title heralds the advent of an exciting new Russian filmmaker. It is, in significant ways, reminiscent of compatriot Kantemir Balagov's 2017 powerful debut, Tesnota (Closeness). The film's raw beauty stems from the power that it draws from the vast vistas the camera captures and juxtaposes with the bleak interiors of the vehicle that carries father and daughter from place to place.

Creatura

Latest and Breaking News on NDTV

Barcelona-born actress Elena Martin Gimeno's second directorial venture, the Catalan-language Creatura, is an astoundingly astute take on a woman coming to terms with her body and repressed sexual longing in a society where fathers and partners alike assume paternalistic postures in the face of female desire. The film, co-written and starring Gimeno, homes in on Mila, who moves to a family summer house in a coastal town with her boyfriend. She is ill at ease with the male touch, a legacy of unresolved issues of her childhood and teenage years. The unflinching, sobering and intimate coming-of-age drama is focussed not only on Mila navigating the fallout of a history of suppression but also, inevitably, on how men respond to the power that resides in the bodies of women.

The Dreamer

Latest and Breaking News on NDTV

Art seen from a purely female perspective is at the heart of The Dreamer, French filmmaker Anais Tellenne's debut film. It centres on Raphael (Raphael Thiery), a one-eyed man of Cyclopean proportions. He looks after a countryside mansion in which nobody lives anymore. Just shy of 60, Raphael lives with his aged mother in a small house at the gates. Burdened with monotony, he hunts moles, plays the bagpipe and goes on an occasional ride in the local postwoman's Kangoo van. The heiress of the manor (Emmanuelle Devos), a performance artist whose installations include a collection of her own tears, arrives out of the blue one night and proceeds to change everything inside the mansion. Raphael's life, too, changes. She decides to use him as a model for a sculpture. The artist-Muse relationship, shorn of sexual dynamics and gender reversed, goes far deeper than a physical transaction and into the realms of the quaintly ineffable. The Dreamer is a wondrously entrancing film.
